Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Ma sha Allah" (مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ): What Allah wills (happens); an expression of acknowledging that all blessings come from Allah's will alone.
  • "La quwwata illa billah" (لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ): There is no power or strength except through Allah; a confession of human weakness and total reliance on Allah's might.
  • "Aqall" (أَقَلَّ): Less or fewer; referring to being inferior in wealth and children.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the beautiful parable of two men—one wealthy and arrogant, the other poor but wise and faithful. The wealthy man, while conversing with his believing companion inside his magnificent garden, boasted about his riches and children, denying the possibility of any resurrection or ultimate accountability. In response, the believing man gently admonished him, saying: "If only, when you entered your garden, you had said: 'Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah' (What Allah wills [has come to pass]; there is no power except through Allah)."

The believer was teaching him a profound lesson: when you enter your garden and marvel at its beauty and abundance, do not let pride fill your heart. Instead, acknowledge that this blessing is purely from Allah's will and grace. Say, "This is what Allah willed for me," and thank Him for His favor. Then add, "There is no power except through Allah," confessing that you have no ability to acquire, maintain, or protect any of this on your own—it is only through Allah's strength and mercy that anything exists or continues.

The believer then continued, addressing the rich man's arrogance: "If you see me as less than you in wealth and children..." — meaning, even if you look down on me because I have fewer possessions and a smaller family, do not let that deceive you. Wealth and children are not measures of honor or security in the sight of Allah. What truly matters is faith, gratitude, and humility. The believer was not envious or bitter; rather, he was redirecting the rich man's focus from worldly pride to spiritual reality, reminding him that Allah's judgment is based on righteousness, not on material abundance.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless message for every Muslim. How often do we enter our homes, our workplaces, our gardens, or even our moments of success, and forget to attribute every blessing to Allah? The phrase "Ma sha Allah" is not just a verbal habit—it is a shield against arrogance and envy. When you utter it, you remind yourself that everything you own is a trust from Allah, and that He can take it away in an instant. And "La quwwata illa billah" is a declaration of dependence: you are weak, but Allah is All-Powerful; you are needy, but Allah is Self-Sufficient.

This verse also teaches us how to respond to those who look down on us. Instead of retaliating with pride or bitterness, we should respond with wisdom and sincere advice, as the believing man did. He did not curse the rich man or wish for his destruction—he simply reminded him of the truth, and then placed his own trust in Allah, hoping for something better in the Hereafter. This is the character of a true believer: humble in prosperity, patient in adversity, and always inviting others to the path of gratitude and faith.

So, dear reader, let this verse be a daily reminder in your life. Whenever you see a blessing—whether it is your health, your family, your wealth, or even a beautiful moment—say: "Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah." Let these words protect you from pride, attract Allah's blessings, and fill your heart with contentment. And know that true honor is not in how much you own, but in how much you remember and rely on your Lord.

📜 Verse 37-41 — Al-Kahf

His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, "Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then proportioned you [as] a man?
But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone.
And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, 'What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah '? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,
It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a calamity from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,
Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it."
