Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) addresses Al-Khidr with a gentle and humble apology after forgetting the condition that Al-Khidr had set—namely, that Musa should not ask about anything until Al-Khidr himself explained it. When the first incident occurred (the scuttling of the boat), Musa forgot his promise and objected. Realizing his mistake, he immediately sought forgiveness and said: "Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not make my matter difficult for me."
This is a beautiful lesson in humility and etiquette. Musa, despite being a great prophet, did not become arrogant or defensive. Instead, he acknowledged his human weakness—forgetfulness—and asked for leniency and ease in his learning journey. He requested that Al-Khidr not be harsh with him or impose such strict conditions that would make the companionship unbearable. Rather, he asked for gentleness and flexibility, hoping to continue benefiting from Al-Khidr's divinely granted knowledge.
The verse teaches us the importance of apologizing sincerely when we err, especially in relationships of learning and mentorship. It also shows that seeking knowledge requires patience, humility, and a willingness to accept correction without pride. Moreover, it highlights the beautiful character of Musa—his softness of heart, his quick return to proper conduct, and his deep desire to learn despite his mistakes.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound message for all of us. How often do we make mistakes and then become defensive or stubborn? How often do we let pride prevent us from saying "I was wrong, please forgive me"? Prophet Musa, one of the greatest messengers of Allah, teaches us that true greatness lies in humility and in the courage to admit our shortcomings. When you err in your relationship with Allah or with others, do not despair—return to Allah in repentance, and seek ease and gentleness in your affairs. Allah loves those who turn back to Him, and He is always ready to forgive. Let this verse inspire you to be gentle with yourself and with others, and to remember that the path of knowledge and faith is a journey of patience, not perfection. May Allah grant us the humility of Musa and the wisdom to learn from every mistake.
