Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Zakiyyah (زَكِيَّةً): Pure, innocent, free from sin — a soul that has not committed any crime deserving of death.
- Bighayri nafsin (بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ): Without a life for a life — meaning, this boy had not killed anyone to warrant retaliation.
- Nukran (نُكْرًا): Something abhorrent, monstrous, and utterly disapproved of.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the incident with the ship, the two companions — Moses (peace be upon him) and Al-Khidr — continued their journey. They walked along the shore until they came across a young boy, still a child who had not yet reached the age of accountability, playing with other children. To Moses’ utter shock, Al-Khidr took the boy’s life then and there.
Moses, unable to contain his distress, protested with the firmness of a prophet who upholds justice: "Have you killed an innocent soul — one pure and free from sin — without that soul having taken another life in return? You have certainly committed a most dreadful and detestable act!"
This was a natural, human reaction from Moses, for the apparent injustice of the act was overwhelming. Yet, as the story unfolds, we learn that this boy was destined to grow into a rebellious, faithless adult who would bring grief to his believing parents. Al-Khidr’s action, though seemingly cruel, was an act of divine mercy in disguise — preserving the parents’ faith and protecting them from the sorrow and corruption their son would have caused.
A Call to Reflect and Embrace:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the limits of human perception. We see only the surface of events, while Allah’s wisdom operates beneath layers we cannot perceive. What appears to be a tragedy may carry within it a hidden mercy; what seems unjust may be the very essence of justice.
Dear reader, this is the beauty of Islam — it invites you to trust in Allah’s infinite wisdom, even when your eyes cannot see the full picture. The Qur’an presents this story not merely as a historical account, but as a mirror for your own life. When trials befall you, when events seem harsh or inexplicable, remember that the All-Knowing Creator sees what you do not. He is the Most Merciful, and His plan for you is always better than what your limited mind can conceive.
Open your heart to this divine guidance, and you will find peace in every circumstance — knowing that with every difficulty, there is ease, and behind every closed door, Allah has prepared a better one for you.
