Explanation of the Verse:

Many among the People of the Book — the Jews and Christians of that time — harbored a deep, burning wish to see you, O believers, turn back from your faith into disbelief, just as you once were before Islam, worshipping idols and following falsehood. This wish was not born out of any truth or justice, but purely out of envy and spite that had settled deep within their hearts. They knew the truth — that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was indeed the Messenger of Allah, and that what he brought was the very truth confirmed in their own scriptures — yet their arrogance and jealousy would not let them accept it. They saw you embrace a faith that brought you honor, unity, and closeness to your Lord, and this pained them immensely.

So Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, commands the believers: forgive them and turn away from their ignorance and hostility. Do not retaliate with hatred or vengeance, do not let their malice provoke you into abandoning your noble character. Overlook their offenses and be patient with them, for their time will come. Allah has a plan, and His decree will unfold at the perfect moment. Indeed, that command came — and when it did, the believers were empowered to defend themselves, and the disbelievers were given the choice of embracing Islam, paying the jizyah (protection tax) in submission, or facing the consequences of their aggression.

And Allah reminds us: "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent." Nothing escapes His power. He is fully capable of exacting justice, of protecting His believers, and of turning the tables on the oppressors. So do not worry about the schemes of the envious — place your trust in Allah, for He is the Best of Planners.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful lesson in patience, dignity, and trust in Allah. It teaches us that when people oppose you out of envy and hatred — even when they know the truth — the believer's response is not to sink to their level, but to rise above it with forgiveness and composure. This is the character of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, and it is the character that won hearts and opened minds.

Notice how Allah does not command us to be weak or passive forever; rather, He says "until Allah brings His command." This means that forgiveness has a time and a limit, and justice has its own moment. The believer balances mercy with strength, patience with action, and trust in Allah with taking the necessary steps.

This verse also calls us to reflect: envy is a destructive disease of the heart. It consumed the People of the Book to the point that they rejected the clear truth. Let us guard our own hearts against envy, and instead rejoice in the blessings Allah has given to others. And when we face hostility from those who are jealous of our faith, let us respond with grace, knowing that Allah is All-Powerful and will never abandon His sincere servants.

Islam is a religion of wisdom and balance — it teaches us to forgive when forgiveness is better, and to act when action is needed. And above all, it teaches us that the ultimate victory belongs to Allah and to those who remain patient and steadfast.

📜 Verse 107-111 — Al-Baqarah

Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and [that] you have not besides Allah any protector or any helper?
Or do you intend to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing.
And they say, "None will enter Paradise except one who is a Jew or a Christian." That is [merely] their wishful thinking, Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."
