Or do you intend to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Am" (أَمْ): Here it means "Or" in the sense of a rhetorical question expressing disapproval and rebuke—i.e., "Do you really intend...?"
  • "Tas'aloo" (تَسْأَلُوا): To ask or request, specifically here referring to asking out of stubbornness, defiance, or unreasonable demands.
  • "Yatabadal" (يَتَبَدَّل): To exchange or swap one thing for another—here, exchanging faith for disbelief.
  • "Sawa' as-Sabeel" (سَوَاءَ السَّبِيلِ): The middle, straight, and correct path—the path of truth and guidance.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse addresses a serious matter of conduct and attitude toward the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Allah asks the believers—and indeed all people—a rebuking question: "Do you truly intend to ask your Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), demanding signs and miracles out of stubbornness and obstinacy, just as the people of Moses asked their prophet before him?"

The Children of Israel had demanded of Moses (peace be upon him) things that were beyond reason and driven by arrogance—such as their bold request: "Show us Allah openly!" (Qur'an 4:153). They were not seeking guidance; they were seeking excuses to reject the truth. Similarly, some among the people of that time—particularly the Jews—said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Bring us a book from heaven all at once, as Moses brought the Torah." They made such demands not out of sincere faith, but out of defiance and a desire to test him.

Allah then delivers a profound warning: "And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the sound path." This means that anyone who chooses disbelief over belief, and replaces the light of guidance with the darkness of misguidance, has lost the way—the middle, straight, and balanced path that leads to Allah's pleasure and to salvation. Such a person has deviated from the path of justice and truth, and has fallen into ignorance and ruin.

A Da'wah Reflection (Call to the Truth):

Dear reader, reflect on this verse and let it be a lesson for your heart. Allah is teaching us a beautiful and protective principle: do not burden your Prophet—and by extension, do not burden the religion—with unnecessary questions and impossible demands. Islam is a religion of ease, clarity, and wisdom. The signs of Allah's truth are already abundant: the Qur'an, the sunnah of His Messenger, and the countless proofs in the universe and within yourselves.

So instead of asking "Why?" in a spirit of doubt, ask "How?" in a spirit of love and obedience. How can I please my Lord? How can I follow my Prophet more closely? How can I be among the successful ones?

And beware—do not exchange the greatest treasure, your faith (iman), for the worthless dust of disbelief. That would be the ultimate loss, and the one who does so has strayed far from the straight path. But Allah, in His mercy, has opened the door of repentance for all who return to Him. So hold firmly to your faith, cherish it, and never let go. Indeed, the path of Islam is the path of peace, success, and eternal happiness. Walk it with confidence, and you will never be lost.

📜 Verse 106-110 — Al-Baqarah

We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?
Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and [that] you have not besides Allah any protector or any helper?
Or do you intend to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing.
