Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse exposes one of the gravest forms of injustice and transgression against Allah: preventing His name from being remembered in His houses of worship and striving to destroy them. Who could be more unjust than the one who blocks the path between the servants and their Lord, shutting the doors of the mosques so that prayer, remembrance, and the recitation of the Qur'an are silenced within them? Such a person does not merely commit a sin—he wages war against the very essence of faith, seeking to erase the light of Allah from the earth.
The verse refers to those who, throughout history, have barred believers from the mosques, whether by physical destruction, closure, or intimidation. This includes the tyrants who demolished the sacred sanctuary, the oppressors who prevented the Prophet ﷺ and his companions from entering the Sacred Mosque at Hudaybiyyah, and every aggressor who has ever sought to silence the call to Allah. Their crime is twofold: they deny Allah His right to be worshipped, and they deny humanity the guidance that flows from His remembrance.
For such people, the verse declares that they have no right to enter the mosques of Allah except in a state of fear—trembling, humbled, and aware that they are intruders in a sacred space they have defiled. Their punishment is twofold: in this world, they will taste disgrace and humiliation, whether through defeat, subjugation, or the contempt of the believers; and in the Hereafter, they will face a punishment so immense that no description can fully convey its severity.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the mosques are the most beloved places on earth to Allah, and those who honor them, fill them with remembrance, and protect them are among the most honored of His creation. Conversely, those who neglect, close, or destroy them—or even hinder others from attending them—incur a wrath that follows them in this life and the next.
Let this be a call to action: cherish your mosques, attend them with devotion, and defend them with your words and deeds. For in doing so, you are defending the very heart of your faith. And know that Allah sees every effort made to preserve His houses, and He will never let the reward of those who strive for His sake be lost.
