Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, declares a stern warning against those who conceal the truth that He has revealed in His Books—especially the descriptions and prophecies of the final Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him)—and who trade this divine guidance for a trivial worldly gain, such as money, status, or leadership. These are the people who prioritize the fleeting pleasures of this life over the eternal truth, and they sell their faith and integrity for a paltry price.
Allah describes their dire state in the most vivid terms: "These are the ones who consume nothing into their bellies except fire." This is not merely metaphorical exaggeration; it is a profound truth. Because their earnings are derived from concealing the truth and spreading falsehood, their wealth is tainted with the unlawful (haram), and that unlawful sustenance will become a cause for their punishment in the Hellfire. In the Hereafter, that which they consumed will be a source of torment, as if they were literally eating fire. Their bellies, which they filled with ill-gotten gains, will be filled with the blazing Fire of Jahannam as recompense for their treachery.
Furthermore, Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection in a manner that brings them comfort or mercy. Rather, He will address them with rebuke and humiliation, and they will be left in utter despair. Allah will not purify them—neither from the filth of their sins nor by praising them—for they have chosen corruption over righteousness. And for them, there is a painful, agonizing torment that knows no end.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder for every believer to uphold the truth, to never conceal what Allah has revealed, and to never sell the verses of Allah for the fleeting goods of this world. The Qur'an is the ultimate guidance, and those who hide it or distort it for personal gain are the greatest losers. Let us reflect on our own conduct: do we prioritize Allah's commands over our desires? Do we speak the truth even when it is against our interests? The promise of Allah is true, and His punishment is severe, but His mercy is vast for those who repent and return to the straight path. May Allah protect us from the fate of those who conceal the truth, and may He make us among those who uphold His Book and spread its light to all of humanity.
