Tafsir (Explanation):
And remember, O Children of Israel, when you grew weary and ungrateful for the exquisite provision Allah had sent down to you—the sweet heavenly nectar (mann) and the delicious quail (salwā). Instead of thanking your Lord, you complained and said to Moses: "We will not endure one type of food forever. Call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its greens, cucumbers, grains, lentils, and onions."
This was a profound display of ingratitude. Allah had chosen for you the purest and most effortless sustenance—food that required no planting, no harvesting, no toil. Yet you demanded the simple, humble crops of the earth, which require labor and effort. So Moses, astonished by your foolish request, rebuked you: "Would you exchange that which is better for that which is lesser? Would you trade the heavenly gift for earthly vegetables? If you truly desire these things, then go down to any town—there you will find all that you asked for in its fields and markets."
And so it was. When they descended to the cities, they found what they sought, but they also reaped the consequences of their persistent defiance and preference for their own desires over Allah's choice. Humiliation and poverty were stamped upon them, and they incurred Allah's wrath. This was because they continually rejected Allah's signs, killed His prophets without any right, and persisted in disobedience and transgression against His commands.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity: how often do we, too, become restless with Allah's blessings and crave what is lesser? How often do we trade spiritual excellence for worldly trivialities? The Children of Israel were given the best of provisions, yet their hearts were restless. They had a prophet among them, yet they complained. They witnessed miracles, yet they doubted.
Let this be a reminder to you, dear reader: gratitude is the key to increase. When Allah gives you something good—even if it seems simple—cherish it, for it is His choice for you. And when you find yourself yearning for what others have, remember that Allah knows what is best for your soul. The one who is content with Allah's decree finds peace; the one who is not, finds only restlessness and loss.
And reflect on the fate of those who rejected their prophets: their humiliation was not merely political or social—it was a spiritual consequence of their arrogance and rebellion. The path of faith is the path of humility, gratitude, and obedience. Walk it, and you will find honor in this life and the next.
