The Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, remember this profound blessing from Allah upon the Children of Israel, and take from it a lesson of His boundless mercy and power. When the people of Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) were wandering in the barren wilderness of Tih, they were stricken with intense thirst. Their throats were parched, and they had no water to drink. In their desperation, they turned to their Prophet, and Musa, peace be upon him, humbly and sincerely raised his hands to his Lord, pleading for water for his people.
Allah, in His infinite mercy, responded to His Prophet's supplication with a clear and miraculous command: "Strike the stone with your staff." Musa obeyed without hesitation, and by the will of Allah, the hard, lifeless rock burst open, and from it gushed forth twelve abundant springs of pure, fresh water. This was no ordinary event—it was a divine miracle tailored precisely to the needs of the twelve tribes of Israel. Each tribe knew its own spring, and no one had to quarrel or compete, for Allah had already assigned to every group its own source of water. This was a sign of Allah's perfect justice and His care for the details of His servants' lives.
Then, Allah addressed them with a command that carried both a gift and a warning: "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah." They were to enjoy the manna and quails that descended upon them, and to drink from the springs that flowed from the rock—all of this was a pure, unearned blessing from their Lord, a sustenance that came without toil or hardship. But alongside this generosity came a clear prohibition: "And do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption." They were not to be ungrateful, nor to transgress the limits set by Allah, nor to sow discord and mischief in the land that had been made a place of refuge for them.
This verse is a timeless reminder for every believer. It teaches us that when we turn to Allah in sincere supplication, He answers, often in ways beyond our imagination. A dry stone can become a source of life-giving water when Allah commands it. It also reminds us that every blessing we receive—whether it is food, water, health, or faith—is from the provision of Allah alone. We must receive it with gratitude, use it with moderation, and never allow our blessings to lead us into arrogance or corruption. The earth is a trust from Allah, and we are its stewards, not its destroyers.
So, dear believer, when you find yourself in a desert of hardship, remember Musa's staff and the mercy of your Lord. Call upon Him, trust in His wisdom, and obey His commands. And when He opens for you springs of provision, let your heart overflow with thanks, and let your hands be agents of goodness, not mischief. For Allah loves those who are grateful and righteous, and He is always near to those who call upon Him.
