Tafsir (Explanation):
After all the miracles you witnessed—the parting of the sea, the manna and quails from the sky, the water gushing from the rock for the twelve tribes, and the Torah given to Musa (Moses)—your hearts, O Children of Israel, became even harder and more stubborn. Instead of softening in humility before your Lord, your hearts turned to stone—or even harder than stone.
Why is this comparison so powerful? Because stones, despite their apparent lifelessness, are not entirely devoid of responsiveness to Allah's command. Some stones crack open and rivers burst forth from them, bringing life and sustenance to the earth. Others split and springs of fresh water flow out, quenching the thirst of people and animals. And some stones, out of profound awe and reverence for Allah, tumble down from the peaks of mountains in submission to His majesty.
Yet your hearts—despite all the signs and reminders—remain unmoved, unyielding, and unsoftened. They do not weep in repentance, nor do they tremble in fear of Allah, nor do they open to receive the truth. This is a profound rebuke: even inanimate rocks show more humility before Allah than the hardened hearts of those who reject His guidance.
And know this: Allah is never unaware of what you do. He sees every intention, every action, and every word. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will hold you accountable for your deeds—whether good or evil. This is both a warning and an invitation: soften your hearts before it is too late, for the door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy is vast for those who turn back to Him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is not just a historical rebuke to the Children of Israel—it is a timeless lesson for all of humanity. Our hearts are the vessels of faith. When they become hard, they cannot absorb the light of guidance, nor can they feel the sweetness of worship, nor can they shed tears of love and fear for Allah.
Look at the stones around you: they crack to release water, they fall in awe of their Creator. If even rocks can respond to Allah's will, how much more should we—beings endowed with intellect, free will, and the gift of revelation—humble ourselves before Him?
The remedy for a hard heart is simple yet profound: return to the Qur'an, reflect on the Hereafter, remember death, and increase in sincere supplication. Let your heart become like soft earth that receives the rain of mercy, not like stone that repels it. Allah is not distant—He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. He is not unaware of your struggles, your tears, or your efforts to change.
So soften your heart today. Turn to Allah in repentance. Let the rivers of His mercy flow into your soul, and let your heart descend in humility before His greatness—just as the stones descend from the mountains in awe of Him. For Allah is ever watchful, ever merciful, and ever ready to forgive those who sincerely return to Him.
