Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • أَنزَلْنَا (Anzalnā): We sent down / We revealed.
  • الْقُرْآن (Al-Qur'ān): The Recitation; the holy scripture revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • لِتَشْقَى (Litashqā): So that you may be distressed, overburdened, or exhausted; to cause hardship or misery.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a profound message of divine mercy and reassurance from Allah to His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was revealed in a context where the Prophet, out of his deep devotion and concern for his people’s rejection of the message, exerted himself immensely in worship and in sorrow—sometimes standing in prayer for so long that his feet would swell, and grieving so intensely over the disbelief of his community that it weighed heavily upon him.

Allah, in His infinite compassion, addresses His Prophet directly: "We have not sent down the Qur'an upon you to cause you distress or to make you miserable." The Qur'an was not revealed to be a source of unbearable hardship, nor to push the Prophet beyond his capacity in acts of worship, nor to make him exhaust himself in grief over those who turned away. Rather, the Qur'an is a mercy, a guidance, a light, and a source of tranquility for the heart. It was sent to elevate him, to comfort him, and to guide humanity out of darkness into light—not to burden him with what he could not bear.

This gentle correction from Allah teaches us a timeless lesson: religion is not meant to be a cause of misery or extremism. The path of faith is one of balance, ease, and compassion. Allah knows our limits and loves for us to be moderate in our worship and our emotions. The Prophet was instructed to lighten his burden, to take care of himself, and to trust that his duty was simply to convey the message—not to force belief or to carry the weight of people’s choices.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, this verse is a treasure of hope for every Muslim. It tells you that your religion is not a prison of exhaustion; it is a sanctuary of peace. When you feel overwhelmed in your worship or in your daily struggles, remember that Allah does not want hardship for you. He wants you to come to Him with a heart at ease, doing what you can with sincerity and love. The Qur'an is your companion, not your burden. It was sent to heal your soul, to guide your steps, and to fill your life with purpose and serenity. So, embrace it with joy, and let it be a source of strength—not of sorrow. And if you ever find yourself grieving over the state of the world or the rejection of others, know that your duty is to share the truth with kindness and to leave the rest to Allah, who is the Best of Planners.
