Word Meanings:
- "Matta'nā": We gave them enjoyment and prolonged their provisions.
- "Ṭāla ʿalayhim al-ʿumur": Life became long for them, and they were deluded by the passage of time.
- "Na'tī al-arḍa nanquṣuhā min aṭrāfihā": We come to the earth, diminishing it from its sides—meaning the conquest of lands and the weakening of the disbelievers' strongholds.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the disbelievers who were deluded by the worldly blessings they received. Allah says: "But We gave enjoyment to these people and their fathers until life became prolonged for them." In other words, the disbelievers of Makkah and their ancestors were granted wealth, children, and long lives—not as a sign of Allah's pleasure, but as a test and a gradual respite. They mistook this delay in punishment for safety and continued in their arrogance and disbelief, thinking they would never be held to account.
Then Allah awakens their hearts with a profound question: "Do they not see that We come to the earth, diminishing it from its sides?" This is a powerful reminder of the divine pattern in history. Allah causes the lands of the disbelievers to shrink—through conquests, defeats, and the spread of Islam—while the lands of the believers expand. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) witnessed this firsthand as the Muslim state grew and the strongholds of shirk fell one after another. This was a clear sign that the promise of Allah is true and that His religion will prevail.
Finally, the verse closes with a rhetorical question that strikes at the core of their false confidence: "Then is it they who will be victorious?" The answer is self-evident—no! They are not the victors; rather, Allah and His messengers are the victors. The disbelievers, despite their numbers, wealth, and apparent strength, are destined for defeat and humiliation, both in this world and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. How often do we see people who are given wealth, status, and long lives, yet they remain heedless of their Creator? They think that because they have been given much, they are secure. But Allah reminds us that worldly blessings are not proof of His pleasure—they can be a test, a gradual pull toward destruction.
Look around you and observe the signs of Allah in the world. Empires rise and fall, nations are humbled, and the truth of Allah's promise unfolds before our eyes. The earth is indeed diminishing from its sides as the light of Islam continues to reach every corner of the globe, and falsehood is constantly being eroded.
So, do not be deceived by the temporary glitter of this world. Turn to Allah with a sincere heart, for He is the One who grants victory to His believing servants. The disbelievers may think they are strong, but the ultimate victory belongs to Allah and those who follow His guidance. Let this verse be a source of hope and certainty for you: no matter how powerful falsehood may appear, it is destined to fade, while the truth of Allah stands firm forever.
