Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse poses a rhetorical question to the polytheists who placed their trust in false gods, asking: "Do they really have deities that can shield them from Our punishment?" The question is not a genuine inquiry but a rebuke, exposing the absurdity of their belief. The idols they worshipped—whether statues, celestial bodies, or righteous people—were themselves powerless. They could not even defend themselves from harm, let alone protect their worshippers. A being that cannot secure its own safety is utterly incapable of granting safety to others.
The verse then delivers a decisive blow: "Nor are they given protection from Us." This means that no one—neither these false gods nor their devotees—can find any refuge or asylum from Allah's decree. When Allah's punishment comes, there is no intercessor, no fortress, and no escape. The idols cannot intercede, and the polytheists cannot run.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: True protection and security come only from Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all. He alone has the power to harm or benefit, to give or withhold. Those who place their trust in anything other than Him—be it wealth, status, people, or false deities—are building their hopes on sand. When trials strike, these false refuges crumble, leaving them exposed and helpless.
Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah does not leave humanity in darkness. He sent messengers and revealed scriptures to guide people toward the only true source of safety: sincere faith in Him and righteous deeds. The door of repentance is always open, and whoever turns back to Allah will find Him Forgiving and Merciful. So let this verse be a call to examine our hearts: Where do we place our trust? Do we rely on fleeting creations, or do we anchor our hopes in the Ever-Living, Self-Sustaining Lord? The answer determines whether we will be protected in this world and the Hereafter.
