Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah the Almighty tells us about His great prophets — Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya'qub (peace be upon them) — and the immense honor He bestowed upon them. He made them leaders and guiding imams for humanity, not merely in worldly matters, but as spiritual beacons who call people to the worship of Allah alone, guiding them to the straight path by Allah's command and permission. Their leadership was not self-appointed or based on personal ambition; rather, it was a divine appointment, a station granted by Allah to those He chose for His message.
Allah then mentions the divine revelation He sent down to them: "We revealed to them the doing of good deeds" — meaning all righteous actions and noble works that bring one closer to Allah — "and establishing the prayer" — performing it with excellence, humility, and consistency — "and giving Zakah" — purifying one's wealth by giving what is due to the poor and needy. These three elements form the foundation of a complete religious life: good deeds that benefit society, prayer that connects the servant to his Lord, and Zakah that purifies the soul and wealth while strengthening the bonds of community.
Finally, Allah describes their ultimate state: "And they were to Us worshippers." This means they were completely devoted, sincerely obedient, and fully submissive to Allah alone, with no partner in their worship. Their entire lives — their leadership, their guidance, their prayers, their charity — were all acts of pure devotion to their Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
This verse carries a profound message for every Muslim today. Allah chose these prophets as leaders because of their complete submission and devotion. If we aspire to be leaders in goodness — in our families, communities, and societies — we must first be true worshippers of Allah. The path to honorable leadership is not through seeking status or power, but through sincere devotion, establishing prayer, giving charity, and performing good deeds consistently.
Notice how Allah combined leadership with worship, and guidance with action. True leadership in Islam is service to Allah and His creation. When you pray sincerely, give your Zakah, and do good deeds with pure intention, you are not just fulfilling obligations — you are building the character that qualifies you to be a guiding light for others.
Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your prayer, be consistent in your charity, and strive in every good deed. For when you devote yourself to Allah, He elevates you — just as He elevated these noble prophets — and makes you a source of guidance for others, by His permission. What greater honor could there be than to be counted among those who guide others to Allah?
