Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mawla (الْمَوْلَىٰ): The protector, helper, or patron.
- Al-Ashir (الْعَشِيرُ): The companion, associate, or one with whom one shares close company and intimacy.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues to describe the condition of the hypocrite or the weak-hearted person who enters Islam with doubt and hesitation, worshipping Allah only when life is smooth and comfortable. When trials befall him, he turns away from the faith, losing both this world and the Hereafter. Such a person, in his misguided state, calls upon and worships idols and false deities instead of Allah.
The verse says: "He calls upon one whose harm is closer than his benefit." This means that the false gods and idols he invokes bring him harm that is certain and near, while any supposed benefit is distant, doubtful, or entirely nonexistent. In fact, worshipping these idols only guarantees harm — both in this life, through the spiritual corruption and misguidance it brings, and in the Hereafter, through the punishment of Hellfire. The harm of these idols is not merely possible; it is inevitable and immediate, whereas their imagined benefit is pure illusion.
Then Allah declares: "What an evil protector and what an evil companion!" This is a severe condemnation of these false deities. As a *mawla* (protector or helper), they are utterly worthless — they cannot defend their worshippers, answer their calls, or provide any real support. As an *ashir* (companion), they are equally despicable — they offer no true friendship, guidance, or benefit, and instead lead their devotees straight into destruction.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the one who abandons Allah and turns to false objects of worship — whether idols, wealth, status, or any other worldly obsession — is clinging to a companion that will only bring him harm. The true believer, however, recognizes that Allah alone is the ultimate Protector and the best of Companions. He is always near, always hearing, and His help is never far from those who sincerely call upon Him.
So let every heart reflect: whom do you call upon in times of need? Whose help do you seek? The idols of this world — be they material possessions, fleeting pleasures, or false ideologies — will inevitably disappoint you. Their harm is closer than their benefit. But Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, is the best of protectors and the most loving of companions. Turn to Him, and you will never be let down.
