Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yarmoona (يَرْمُونَ): Literally "to throw" or "to cast," meaning here to accuse or slander someone with a grave charge.
  • Al-Muhsanat (الْمُحْصَنَاتُ): Chaste, pure, and virtuous women who are free and have never committed adultery or fornication. This also applies to chaste men by extension.
  • Fajlidoohum (فَاجْلِدُوهُمْ): Flog them — strike them with a whip as a prescribed legal punishment.
  • Jaldah (جَلْدَةً): A single stroke or lash of the whip.
  • Al-Fasiqoon (الْفَاسِقُونَ): Those who have deviated from obedience to Allah and His commands — the wicked and rebellious.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse establishes a sacred protective boundary for the honor and dignity of believers, particularly for chaste and pure individuals. Allah, in His infinite wisdom and justice, commands that those who accuse virtuous, chaste women (and by extension, chaste men) of adultery or fornication — without bringing four just witnesses to testify to the truth of their accusation — must be punished with eighty lashes. Furthermore, their own testimony is to be rejected forever, and they are branded as sinners who have deviated from the path of righteousness.

This ruling serves multiple profound purposes. First, it shields the Muslim community from the destructive poison of slander and false accusation, which can destroy reputations, tear families apart, and spread corruption throughout society. The requirement of four witnesses is not a mere formality — it is a deliberate and stringent standard that makes it virtually impossible to prove such a grave accusation unless it is truly and undeniably established. This protects the innocent from malicious gossip and protects the sanctity of people's honor.

Second, the punishment of eighty lashes and the permanent rejection of their testimony acts as a powerful deterrent. It teaches the believer that the tongue is a trust from Allah, and that speaking about the honor of others carries immense responsibility. The one who falsely accuses another of immorality not only harms the victim but also harms their own soul, losing their credibility as a witness in all matters for the rest of their life.

Third, this verse elevates the status of chastity and purity in the sight of Allah. By protecting the reputation of the virtuous, Allah honors them and makes it clear that their dignity is sacred. This is a mercy for the entire community, as it fosters an environment of mutual trust, respect, and safety.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear brother or sister in humanity, look at the beauty of this divine legislation! In a world where rumors spread like wildfire and a single word can destroy a person's life, Allah — the Most Merciful — has built a fortress of protection around the honor of His servants. This verse is not merely a punishment; it is a declaration of how precious every believer is in the sight of their Creator.

Imagine a society where no one dares to speak ill of another without absolute proof — where honor is protected, where trust flourishes, and where hearts are safe from the poison of suspicion. This is the society Islam seeks to build. This is the mercy of Allah reaching out to protect you, your family, and your community.

And know this: if you ever find yourself tempted to speak against someone, remember that your tongue is a scale — on the Day of Judgment, every word you uttered will be weighed. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." This verse is a living embodiment of that noble guidance.

Embrace this divine wisdom with an open heart. Let it purify your tongue, protect your brothers and sisters, and draw you closer to the One who knows what is in your soul. For in obeying Allah's commands, you find not restriction, but true liberation — liberation from the sins of the tongue, and a path to His eternal pleasure.

📜 Verse 2-6 — An-Nur

The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that has been made unlawful to the believers.
And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,
Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful.
