Explanation of the Verse:
This verse strikes at the very heart of the matter of chastity and purity in Islamic society. Allah Almighty says that a man who habitually commits adultery or fornication—and persists in this sin without repentance—will not naturally desire to marry anyone except a woman who shares his immoral disposition, or a polytheistic woman who does not acknowledge the sanctity of marriage and the prohibition of zina (unlawful sexual relations). Similarly, a woman who habitually commits zina will not be inclined to marry anyone except a man who is like her in his corruption, or a polytheist who does not respect the boundaries set by Allah.
This is a profound statement about the natural affinity between people of similar character: the pure are drawn to the pure, and the corrupt are drawn to the corrupt. The verse then declares that Allah has made such marriages—between a Muslim man and a known adulteress or polytheist, or between a Muslim woman and a known adulterer or polytheist—strictly forbidden for the believers.
This ruling came in a specific context: some poor Muslim men from the emigrants (Muhajirun) intended to marry women of ill-repute in Madinah, who were also polytheists, hoping to gain some worldly benefit. Allah revealed this verse to protect the honor and purity of the believing community. The wisdom here is twofold: first, to safeguard the believer from falling into sin through a corrupt spouse, and second, to uphold the dignity of the family unit, which is the cornerstone of a righteous society.
The verse does not close the door of repentance—far from it. If a man or woman who committed zina sincerely repents, purifies themselves, and reforms their conduct, then the prohibition is lifted, and they may marry a chaste believer. The door of Allah’s mercy is always open. But as long as one persists in this major sin, they are not fit to be joined in the sacred bond of marriage with a chaste, believing soul.
A Call to Purity and Faith:
Dear believer, this verse is a beautiful reminder of how much Allah cares for His servants. He does not want you to be harmed, nor does He want your heart to be corrupted by a partner who drags you away from His path. Marriage is not merely a contract—it is a sanctuary of love, mercy, and tranquility. Allah wants you to build that sanctuary on the foundation of faith and chastity, so that your home becomes a place where His blessings descend and your children are raised upon righteousness.
So, guard your purity, seek a spouse who fears Allah, and if you have fallen into sin, do not despair—turn back to your Lord in sincere repentance, for He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful. He will purify your heart and grant you a righteous partner who will be a comfort to your eyes and a companion on the path to Paradise. This is the promise of Allah, and His promise is true.
