Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَابُوا (Taaboo): They repented — turning back to Allah in sincere remorse and abandoning the sin.
- وَأَصْلَحُوا (Wa aslahoo): And they mended their ways — correcting their conduct, reforming their deeds, and making amends for the harm caused.
- غَفُورٌ (Ghafoor): Oft-Forgiving — He who conceals sins and pardons them completely.
- رَّحِيمٌ (Raheem): Most Merciful — He who showers His compassion and kindness upon His servants.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse comes as a door of hope and mercy, opening wide after the severe punishment mentioned for those who falsely accuse chaste women of immorality. Allah, in His infinite justice, prescribed a harsh penalty for this grave sin — eighty lashes, rejection of testimony, and being branded as wicked. Yet, immediately after, He reveals His boundless mercy: *"Except those who repent after that and reform themselves."*
The exception is clear and full of grace. If the slanderer sincerely turns back to Allah — regretting what he said, seeking forgiveness, and amending his behavior — then the door of repentance is not closed. His repentance is accepted, his testimony is restored, and the stain of wickedness is washed away. The punishment is lifted, and he is reintegrated into the Muslim community as a person of integrity once more.
The condition is twofold: repentance (turning away from the sin with genuine remorse) and reformation (correcting one's actions and proving the change through righteous conduct). This is not a mere verbal claim; it is a transformation that manifests in deeds. The one who repents must also strive to repair the damage — whether by clearing the name of the one he slandered or by improving his own character so that trust is rebuilt.
Then comes the divine assurance: *"Then indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."* This is not a vague promise — it is a certainty from the Lord of the worlds. He forgives the repentant sinner, erases the sin as if it never occurred, and showers him with His mercy. The very One who legislated the punishment is the One who opens the door of pardon.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear brother, dear sister — look at the beauty of this religion! Even after a sin as grave as false accusation, which tears apart families and destroys reputations, Allah does not close the door. He says: *"Return to Me, and I will forgive you."* How can anyone despair of Allah's mercy when He Himself invites the sinner to come back?
If you have fallen into any sin — whether in speech, action, or thought — know that your Lord is waiting for your return. He does not need your repentance; you need His forgiveness. So hasten to Him, mend your ways, and let your life be a testimony to His mercy. For He is the One who said: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful"* (Az-Zumar 39:53).
This is the religion of hope, the path of redemption, and the promise of a Lord who never breaks His word.
