Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jahda aymanihim: The most solemn and emphatic oaths they could possibly swear, using Allah's name with utmost seriousness.
- La yakhrujunna: They will certainly go out (for jihad/struggle in Allah's cause).
- Ta'atun ma'rufah: Obedience that is known and recognized as sincere, not merely claimed by words.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The hypocrites—those who outwardly claimed faith but harbored disbelief in their hearts—swore by Allah with the most solemn and emphatic oaths imaginable, saying: "If you command us to go out and fight in Allah's cause, we will most certainly go out with you, O Messenger of Allah." They made these promises repeatedly, trying to convince the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers of their sincerity and loyalty.
But Allah exposed their empty words and commanded His Messenger to respond: "Do not swear these oaths." Why? Because their obedience was known to be merely verbal—words on their tongues without any genuine commitment in their hearts. True obedience is that which is recognized by action, not by empty promises and exaggerated vows. The hypocrites thought that by swearing these heavy oaths they could hide their true intentions, but Allah sees everything.
Allah then delivers a powerful reminder: "Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do." Nothing escapes His knowledge—not the hidden intentions, not the whispered doubts, not the insincere promises. He knows what is in the hearts and what will manifest in actions, and He will hold everyone accountable accordingly.
A Call to Sincerity:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. How often do we make promises to Allah—to pray more, to give charity, to strive in His path—yet our actions fall short of our words? Allah does not need our oaths or our grand declarations; He wants our sincere, consistent actions. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that the heaviest deed on the scales is not eloquent speech but righteous action performed with a sincere heart.
Islam is a religion of truthfulness and integrity. Let your obedience be "ma'rufah"—known and evident through your deeds, not merely claimed by your tongue. When you say you love Allah, let your actions prove it. When you promise to strive for His cause, let your feet move and your hands work. For Allah is not deceived by appearances or words—He sees the reality of what you do, and He rewards you according to your true intentions and deeds.
So purify your heart, be honest with your Lord, and let your actions speak louder than your words. This is the path of the true believers—those whose faith is not a claim but a reality witnessed in every aspect of their lives.
