  • Yarmoona (يَرْمُونَ): To accuse or cast an allegation, specifically here, accusing one's wife of adultery (zina).
  • Azwaajahum (أَزْوَاجَهُمْ): Their wives/spouses.
  • Shuhadaa' (شُهَدَاءُ): Witnesses who can testify to the truth of the accusation.

  • Al-Saadiqeen (الصَّادِقِينَ): The truthful ones.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses a profoundly sensitive and critical situation within marital life—when a husband accuses his wife of adultery but has no witnesses to support his claim, other than himself. In such a case, Islam establishes a just and merciful procedure known as *Li'an* (mutual imprecation), which protects both parties from injustice.

When a husband accuses his wife of committing adultery, and he cannot produce four witnesses as required by Islamic law for such a grave accusation, he is not left without recourse, nor is the wife left defenseless. Instead, Allah, in His infinite wisdom, prescribes that the husband must swear four oaths before a judge, each time solemnly declaring: "I bear witness by Allah that I am indeed truthful in my accusation against my wife." These four oaths serve as his testimony, replacing the required witnesses, because no one else can know what happens privately between spouses.

This procedure is a profound manifestation of Allah's justice and mercy. It acknowledges the reality that some sins occur in secrecy, where no external witnesses exist. At the same time, it upholds the sanctity of marriage and the honor of the wife, as the husband's accusation alone is not sufficient to punish her. The gravity of these four oaths—sworn before Allah, the All-Knowing and All-Seeing—places the husband in a position of immense accountability, as he stands before his Lord, knowing that Allah is fully aware of whether he is truthful or lying.

This verse also carries a powerful lesson for every believer: the importance of truthfulness and the fear of Allah in all matters, especially those involving the honor and dignity of others. Islam teaches us to guard our tongues, to avoid false accusations, and to remember that Allah is the ultimate Witness over all that we say and do. When a person contemplates the weight of these oaths, they are reminded that no sin can be hidden from Allah, and that the Hereafter holds the final judgment for all deeds.

Furthermore, this legislation reflects the comprehensive nature of Islamic law, which addresses even the most delicate and difficult human situations with fairness and wisdom. It protects the family unit, preserves social harmony, and ensures that justice is served—whether in this world or in the Hereafter—for both the accuser and the accused. As believers, we are called to trust in Allah's guidance and to implement His laws with sincerity, knowing that He, the Most Wise, knows what is best for His creation.

📜 Verse 4-8 — An-Nur

And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,
Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful.
And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allah be upon him if he should be among the liars.
But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the liars.
