Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Al-Khamisah): The fifth testimony/oath.
(La'nat Allah): The curse of Allah, meaning being cast away from His mercy and subjected to His wrath.
(Min al-Kadhibin): Among those who lie (in their accusation).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse completes the procedure of *Li'an* (mutual imprecation) — a divine legal remedy for a husband who accuses his wife of adultery but has no witnesses other than himself. After the husband swears four times by Allah that he is truthful in his accusation, the fifth oath is a solemn invocation upon himself: he calls down the curse of Allah upon his own soul if he is lying. This fifth statement is not merely a formality; it is a profound act of accountability before Allah, the All-Seeing, Who knows the secrets of every heart. By uttering this, the husband places his own fate in the balance — either he is truthful and Allah will vindicate him, or he is false and he has willingly invited divine wrath upon himself. This severe oath serves as a powerful deterrent against slander, protecting the honor and dignity of the wife, and upholding justice in a manner no human court could fully achieve.

Da'wah Reflection:

How magnificent is the justice of Islam! It does not leave the matter of honor and reputation to mere human judgment, but anchors it in the consciousness of Allah, the All-Knowing. This verse teaches us that the believer's life is built on truthfulness and the fear of Allah. The one who contemplates this divine legislation will find in it a profound mercy: it shields families from destruction, preserves the sanctity of marriage, and reminds every soul that nothing is hidden from Allah. If a person fears the curse of Allah in this world and the next, how much more should they fear false accusations and slander? Let this verse inspire you to be a person of truth, to guard your tongue, and to trust that Allah's justice is perfect — for He is the Best of Judges, and His mercy encompasses those who uphold righteousness.

📜 Verse 5-9 — An-Nur

Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful.
And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allah be upon him if he should be among the liars.
But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the liars.
And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful.
