Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Khilfah (خِلْفَةً): Succession, alternation, or one replacing the other. It means that the night and day follow each other in succession, each taking the place of the other.
  • Yadhakkara (يَذَّكَّرَ): To remember, reflect, or take heed — deriving from *tadhakkur*, which is the act of pondering and drawing lessons.
  • Shukūran (شُكُورًا): Gratitude, thankfulness — an abundance of thanks given to Allah for His blessings.

Tafsir (Interpretation):

Allah — glorified and exalted — is the One who created the night and the day, making them alternate in perfect succession. The night gives way to the day, and the day gives way to the night, each one replacing the other in a precise, unbroken rhythm. Whatever is lost from one is added to the other, and this cycle continues without fail, hour after hour, season after season.

This divine alternation is not a random occurrence — it is a purposeful sign, placed by the All-Wise Creator for a profound reason: for whoever wishes to reflect and remember, or whoever wishes to give thanks.

For the one who desires to remember: the succession of night and day is a living lesson. When the night falls, you witness darkness, stillness, and rest — a reminder of death and the temporary nature of this world. When the day breaks, you witness light, activity, and renewal — a reminder of life and resurrection. The constant change itself teaches you that this world is not permanent, that there is a Creator who controls all things, and that you must prepare for the eternal life to come. Every sunrise and every sunset is an invitation to wake up from heedlessness and turn back to Allah.

For the one who desires to give thanks: the alternation of night and day is a continuous stream of blessings. Think of how the night brings rest, tranquility, and recovery for your body and mind. Think of how the day brings light, provision, and opportunities to work and worship. If the day never ended, you would be exhausted. If the night never ended, you would never earn your livelihood. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, made them succeed one another — so that you may rest in the darkness and strive in the light, and in both, you find reasons to thank Him.

So, dear believer, look at the sky as the sun sets and as it rises. Let every moment of transition remind you of your Lord. Let the night be a time of reflection and the day a time of gratitude. Do not let these signs pass you by without heed — for they are placed before you as a mercy, calling you to remember your Creator and to thank Him for His countless favors.

And know that the one who reflects on this perfect system will only increase in faith, and the one who gives thanks will only increase in blessings — for Allah has promised: *"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]."* (Ibrahim 14:7).

📜 Verse 60-64 — Al-Furqan

And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion.
Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon.
And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude.
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,
And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]
