Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- هَوْنًا (Hawnan): Walking gently, with calmness, dignity, and humility—not in an arrogant or haughty manner.
- الْجَاهِلُونَ (Al-Jahilun): Those who are ignorant and foolish, who speak or behave rudely and offensively.
- قَالُوا سَلَامًا (Qalu Salaman): They say words of peace and safety—meaning they respond with good, wholesome speech that is free from sin and provocation.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse paints a beautiful portrait of the true servants of the Most Merciful (Allah). It describes them with two magnificent qualities that every believer should strive to embody:
First: They walk upon the earth with *humble tranquility*. Their steps are not marked by pride, arrogance, or self-importance. They move through life with a serene dignity, knowing that the earth beneath them is but a temporary abode, and that true greatness lies in humility before their Creator. They do not strut or boast; their presence radiates peace, not pomp.
Second: When the ignorant and foolish address them with harsh words, insults, or provocations, they do not lower themselves to the same level. Instead of responding with anger or retaliation, they reply with *salam*—words of peace, safety, and goodness. They say what is right and beneficial, avoiding sin, conflict, and the escalation of hostility. Their response disarms the aggressor and preserves their own purity of heart.
This is the hallmark of true faith: strength is not in returning evil for evil, but in restraining oneself and choosing the higher path of wisdom and grace. The believer understands that responding to ignorance with ignorance only multiplies darkness, while responding with light can illuminate even the hardest of hearts.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, imagine the beauty of a soul that remains unshaken by the storms of foolishness around it. Imagine the peace that fills the heart of one who refuses to be dragged into pointless arguments and ugly exchanges. This is the character that Allah loves and honors—the character of His beloved servants.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) embodied this perfectly. When the ignorant of Makkah abused him, threw stones at him, and called him a liar, he responded with patience, forgiveness, and prayers for their guidance. He did not curse them or wish harm upon them; he sought their good.
Today, in a world filled with provocation, social media hostility, and endless disputes, this verse is a living guide for us. It teaches us that our worth is not measured by how loudly we argue or how sharply we retort, but by how gracefully we carry ourselves and how mercifully we treat even those who mistreat us.
Let us ask ourselves: Are we among the servants of the Most Merciful? Do we walk with humility? Do we respond to ignorance with wisdom and peace? If we strive to embody these qualities, we will not only earn Allah’s love but also become beacons of light in a world that desperately needs gentleness and restraint.
May Allah make us among His true servants who walk the earth with humility and speak only what is good.
