Word Meanings:

  • Rasūl (رَسُولٌ): A messenger sent by Allah with a divine message to guide a specific people.
  • Amīn (أَمِينٌ): Trustworthy, faithful, and reliable in conveying the message without any alteration, addition, or omission.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) addresses his people, the ʿĀd, with a profound declaration of his role and character. He says: "Indeed, I am to you a messenger, trustworthy." This statement serves as both an introduction and a reassurance. Prophet Hūd is affirming that he has been sent by Allah Almighty specifically to them, carrying a message of monotheism and righteousness. His trustworthiness is not a mere claim; it is a quality that his people had known about him throughout his life among them. He was known for his honesty, integrity, and moral excellence before he received the prophethood, and this same character continued in his mission.

The verse emphasizes two fundamental aspects of his call: first, that he is a genuine messenger chosen by Allah, not an imposter or a self-proclaimed leader; and second, that he is fully reliable in delivering the divine message exactly as revealed, without any distortion, personal bias, or hidden agenda. He does not seek wealth, status, or power from his people; his sole concern is their salvation and their return to the worship of the One True God. This declaration is a call to reflect: if a person of such known honesty and integrity brings you a message from Allah, then how can you turn away from it?

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer and every caller to Islam. The character of a messenger is the foundation of his message. When you are known for your truthfulness and trustworthiness in all your dealings, your words carry weight, and your call resonates with sincerity. Prophet Hūd did not begin by listing demands or threatening punishment; he began by establishing his credibility and his connection to Allah. This is a beautiful model for us: to be people of integrity in our daily lives, so that when we speak about Islam, others listen with open hearts. And for the believers, this verse reminds us of the immense blessing of having messengers who were divinely chosen and protected in their conveyance of the truth. How fortunate are we to have received a message delivered by such trustworthy hands, from Adam to Noah, to Hūd, to Abraham, to Moses, to Jesus, and finally to Muhammad (peace be upon them all)? Let us honor this trust by accepting the message, living by it, and conveying it to others with the same honesty and sincerity that the messengers themselves embodied.
