Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Fattaqū (فَاتَّقُوا): Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and protect yourselves from His punishment by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
- Wa Aṭīʿūn (وَأَطِيعُونِ): And obey me — meaning, follow the Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) in what he conveyed from Allah, including the call to worship Allah alone and to abandon wrongdoing.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, the Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) addresses his people, the ʿĀd, with a sincere and heartfelt call. He says to them: "So fear Allah and obey me." This is a direct and clear invitation to two essential matters: first, to have taqwā (God-consciousness) — that is, to be mindful of Allah in every action, to fulfill His commands, and to stay away from what He has forbidden. Second, to obey him in the message he brought from Allah, which is the call to pure monotheism (tawḥīd) and to abandon the worship of false idols.
Hūd’s call is not a demand for personal gain or authority; rather, it is a call rooted in compassion and mercy for his people. He reminds them that his reward is only with Allah, the Lord of all worlds. He is a trustworthy messenger, faithfully delivering what Allah has entrusted him with. His words carry a gentle yet firm warning: if they continue in their arrogance and disbelief, they will face the severe consequences of Allah’s punishment. But if they respond with faith and obedience, they will attain safety and success in this life and the Hereafter.
This verse beautifully illustrates the essence of prophetic calling: it combines the fear of Allah with obedience to His messengers, for true success lies in following the guidance that comes from Allah through His chosen prophets. It also teaches us that the messengers of Allah never sought worldly rewards; their sole concern was the salvation and well-being of their people.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message for every human being. It reminds us that the path to Allah is simple yet profound: fear Him sincerely and follow His guidance. When we obey Allah and His messengers, we are not losing our freedom — rather, we are protecting ourselves from harm and opening the doors to true peace and happiness. The call of Hūd (peace be upon him) is the same call of every prophet: to worship Allah alone, to live righteously, and to secure a place in His eternal mercy. Let us respond to this call with open hearts, for it is the key to success in this world and the next. May Allah make us among those who hear the truth and follow it with sincerity and love.
