Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Tilka" (Those/That): Refers to the favor mentioned by Pharaoh — the upbringing of Musa (Moses) in his household.
  • "Tamunnuha" (You bestow as a favor): To remind someone of a kindness done to them, often with an air of obligation or reproach.
  • "Abbadta" (You enslaved): To subjugate and treat as slaves, depriving people of their freedom and dignity.
  • "Bani Isra'il" (Children of Israel): The descendants of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him — the people to whom Musa was sent.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) responds to Pharaoh's arrogant reminder of the favor he had done by raising Musa in his palace and sparing his life. Musa, with profound wisdom and courage, turns the tables on Pharaoh's argument. He acknowledges that being raised in Pharaoh's home was indeed a favor, but he immediately exposes the contradiction in Pharaoh's claim: "You remind me of this kindness, yet you have enslaved my people, the Children of Israel!"

Musa's point is sharp and clear: How can Pharaoh boast of a personal kindness to one individual while simultaneously oppressing an entire nation? The enslavement of the Children of Israel — killing their sons and sparing their daughters — was a crime so great that it nullified any personal favor done to Musa. In fact, Musa's very escape from Egypt was because Pharaoh sought to kill him, and his upbringing in the palace did not erase the tyranny that forced him to flee.

This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson in justice and moral courage: A true believer does not remain silent in the face of oppression, even when the oppressor has shown them personal kindness. Truth and justice take precedence over personal favors. Musa did not deny the favor, but he refused to let it be used as a tool to silence him from speaking the truth and defending his people.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse inspires us to stand firmly for justice, no matter the circumstances. It reminds us that personal benefits or relationships should never blind us to the greater wrongs committed against others. As Muslims, we are called to be witnesses of truth and defenders of the oppressed, just as Musa (peace be upon him) was. Even when faced with a tyrant who had once shown him kindness, Musa prioritized the cause of Allah and the freedom of his people. Let us learn from this noble example — to speak truth with wisdom, to be grateful for genuine kindness, but never to compromise our principles for the sake of worldly favors. Indeed, the most beloved deeds to Allah are those that uphold justice and dignity for all of humanity.
