Word Meanings:
- "Wa mā" (وما): This interrogative phrase here carries a tone of denial, disregard, and mockery. Pharaoh is not genuinely asking for information; rather, he is belittling the concept of a Lord of all worlds, as if to say, "What is this Lord you speak of?"
- "Rabb" (رَب): The Lord, Master, Sustainer, and Owner who nurtures, governs, and manages all affairs of His creation.
- "Al-'Ālamīn" (الْعَالَمِينَ): All the worlds — every created being and realm that exists, including humans, angels, jinn, animals, plants, the heavens, the earth, and everything in between.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) stood before Pharaoh and declared, "Indeed, I am a messenger of the Lord of the worlds" (Qur'an 26:16), Pharaoh responded with arrogance and contempt. He said: "And what is the Lord of the worlds?" — meaning, "What is this being you claim sent you? I know of no lord except myself! I am your supreme lord."
Pharaoh's question was not a sincere inquiry seeking truth. It was a rhetorical challenge laced with mockery and denial. He wanted to embarrass Moses in front of the gathered assembly, to portray him as a madman speaking of something nonexistent. Yet, in his very question, Pharaoh revealed his ignorance — for the true Lord is not a concept to be questioned as if He were a thing among things. He is the Creator, the Sustainer, and the Owner of every realm that Pharaoh could never comprehend.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the enemies of truth often resort to mockery and belittlement when they cannot refute the message with logic. They try to confuse people by framing sacred truths in a sarcastic tone. But the believer's response, as Moses would soon demonstrate, is to answer with clarity, wisdom, and unwavering certainty — describing the Lord through His magnificent signs in the heavens and the earth, and His absolute dominion over all that exists.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this moment in the story of Moses! A single man, armed only with faith, stands before the most powerful tyrant of his time. Pharaoh, with all his armies and treasures, tries to shake Moses' certainty with one sarcastic question. But the believer's heart is anchored in the knowledge of his Lord — a knowledge that no amount of mockery can erode.
Dear reader, when people today ask you with a sneer, "Who is your God?" or "What is this religion of yours?" — do not be shaken. Answer them with the same confidence Moses had. Describe your Lord as the One who created the heavens without pillars, who spread the earth as a dwelling, who sent down rain to bring life to dead lands, who knows the secret of every ant in the darkness and every star in the vast cosmos. The more they mock, the more you should shine with the light of certainty. For the Lord of the worlds is not a myth to be debated — He is the reality upon which every atom of existence depends. And when you know Him, no question of a mocker can ever diminish your peace.
