Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Aʿizzah (أَعِزَّة): The noble, honorable, and powerful leaders of a people.
  • Adhillah (أَذِلَّة): The humiliated, subdued, and powerless.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the Queen of Sheba received Prophet Sulayman's (peace be upon him) letter inviting her people to submit to Allah and enter His worship, she did not rush to a decision. Instead, she gathered her council of chiefs and advisors, seeking their counsel—a mark of her wisdom and consultative leadership. When they offered to fight, she responded with profound insight and political acumen, warning them of the grave consequences of confronting a mighty king.

She said: "Indeed, kings—when they enter a town by force and conquest—they corrupt it and devastate it. They destroy its infrastructure, plunder its wealth, and turn its noble and honorable people into humiliated subjects. They kill some, take others captive, and strip the community of its dignity and strength." This is not merely an opinion; it is the established, unbroken pattern of conquerors throughout history. They do this to instill fear and terror in the hearts of people, so that their authority is never challenged.

And Allah Himself confirms her words, saying: "And thus they do"—affirming that this is indeed the way of kings and conquerors. This statement from the Queen was not just political wisdom; it was a truthful observation of human nature and the lust for power.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for humanity. The Queen of Sheba recognized that the power of kings is built on corruption, humiliation, and destruction. Yet, look at the contrast: Sulayman (peace be upon him) was not an ordinary king. He was a prophet and a servant of Allah. His power was a divine gift, and his mission was not to corrupt or humiliate, but to guide and elevate. When he received her message, he did not respond with aggression or tyranny. Instead, he responded with a call to the truth—the worship of the One True God.

This teaches us that true leadership in Islam is not about domination, but about service. It is not about humiliating people, but about honoring them with the message of justice and mercy. The Quran invites us to reflect: Which power do we seek? The fleeting power of tyrants that destroys, or the eternal power of Allah that builds and elevates? Choose the path of Sulayman—the path of faith, wisdom, and justice—and you will find honor in this life and the next.

She said, "O eminent ones, advise me in my affair. I would not decide a matter until you witness [for] me."
They said, "We are men of strength and of great military might, but the command is yours, so see what you will command."
She said, "Indeed kings - when they enter a city, they ruin it and render the honored of its people humbled. And thus do they do.
But indeed, I will send to them a gift and see with what [reply] the messengers will return."
So when they came to Solomon, he said, "Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift.
