Word Meanings:

  • Hadiyyah (هدية): A gift or present, often used to soften relations or test intentions.
  • Fa-nāthiratun (فناظرة): Waiting, observing, or anticipating the outcome.
  • Yarji‘u al-mursalūn (يرجع المرسلون): What the messengers return with — whether acceptance or rejection, and what response they bring back.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the Queen of Sheba (Bilqis) continues her cautious and diplomatic approach upon receiving Prophet Sulayman’s letter. She had gathered her advisors and chiefs, and after sharing the letter with them, she wisely chose not to rush into a military confrontation. Instead, she devised a strategy to test the nature of Sulayman’s message and his true intentions.

She said: "I am going to send them a gift, and I will wait to see what the messengers bring back." Her plan was twofold: first, to gauge whether Sulayman was a worldly king who would accept the gift and be appeased, or a true prophet of Allah who would reject worldly offerings and remain firm in his call to monotheism. Second, to buy time and gather more information about this powerful leader who had invited her people to submit to Allah alone.

This reflects the Queen’s wisdom and foresight. She understood that kings and rulers often have a nature of dominance and destruction — when they enter a land by force, they ruin it and humiliate its noble people. So she avoided direct hostility and chose a peaceful, calculated approach, hoping to resolve the matter without bloodshed.

The verse also highlights a profound lesson: the Queen was not merely sending a gift out of flattery or fear, but as a test. She wanted to see whether Sulayman would be swayed by material wealth or remain steadfast in his prophetic mission. This shows her intelligence and her desire to discern the truth before committing her people to any course of action.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This story carries a beautiful lesson for us as Muslims. The Queen of Sheba, despite being a powerful ruler, approached the message of Sulayman with an open mind and a thoughtful heart. She did not let pride or arrogance blind her from considering the truth. When the gift was rejected and the message of Tawheed was delivered clearly, she eventually recognized the truth and submitted to Allah.

As believers, we are reminded that the Qur’an is not just a book of stories — it is a guide for life. The way the Queen sought clarity before making a decision is a model of wisdom for anyone seeking the truth. And the way Sulayman, as a prophet, refused the gift and insisted on the message of Allah teaches us that no worldly wealth can compare to the treasure of faith.

Let this verse inspire you to always seek the truth with sincerity, to weigh your decisions with wisdom, and to remember that the ultimate victory belongs to those who submit to Allah and follow His messengers. The Qur’an is a light that illuminates every situation, and its stories are filled with guidance for those who reflect. May Allah grant us the wisdom to understand His Book and the courage to act upon it.

📜 Verse 33-37 — An-Naml

They said, "We are men of strength and of great military might, but the command is yours, so see what you will command."
She said, "Indeed kings - when they enter a city, they ruin it and render the honored of its people humbled. And thus do they do.
But indeed, I will send to them a gift and see with what [reply] the messengers will return."
So when they came to Solomon, he said, "Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift.
Return to them, for we will surely come to them with soldiers that they will be powerless to encounter, and we will surely expel them therefrom in humiliation, and they will be debased."
