Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mudtarr (الْمُضْطَرَّ): The one who is in severe distress, hardship, or dire need—someone whose circumstances have become overwhelmingly difficult and who has no one to turn to except Allah.
- Yakshif al-Soo’ (وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوءَ): Removes and relieves the harm, affliction, or evil that has befallen a person, such as illness, poverty, or calamity.
- Khulafa’ al-Ard (خُلَفَاءَ الْأَرْضِ): Successors and inheritors of the earth—generations that follow one another, dwelling in the land and prospering in it.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse poses a profound rhetorical question to awaken the human conscience: Is the one you worship alongside Allah—these idols and false deities—better, or is it Allah Who answers the call of the distressed when they cry out to Him in their moment of utter helplessness? When all doors close, when every human remedy fails, and when the soul is crushed under the weight of calamity, it is Allah alone Who hears the desperate plea and responds. He is the One Who lifts the affliction, removes the harm, and turns despair into relief.
Moreover, He is the One Who has made you successors on this earth, generation after generation, granting you the ability to inhabit, cultivate, and benefit from the land. He gives you power, sustenance, and life itself. So, is there any deity besides Allah who can do all of this? The answer is an emphatic no—yet how little you reflect! How rarely do you pause to consider these undeniable signs? Your forgetfulness and lack of contemplation are what lead you to associate partners with Him in worship, despite His countless blessings upon you.
A Da’wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful invitation to turn sincerely to Allah in every moment of need. It reminds us that no matter how dire our situation may seem, Allah is always near, always ready to answer. The One who created you, who sustains you, and who has placed you on this earth as His vicegerents—how could you ever turn to anyone else? Let this be a call to purify your heart, to rely solely on Him, and to recognize that true relief, true success, and true peace lie only in His hands. When you are in distress, raise your hands to Him—He is the Most Merciful, the Most Responsive. And when He answers you, let that be a reminder of His love and power, drawing you closer to Him in gratitude and worship.
