Key Words and Meanings:

  • Ẓulumāt (ظُلُمَات): Deep, overwhelming darkness; plural form emphasizing layers of darkness.
  • Al-Barr (الْبَرِّ): The land, including deserts and wilderness where one can easily lose direction.
  • Al-Baḥr (الْبَحْرِ): The sea, vast and treacherous, where navigation depends on signs.
  • Bushran (بُشْرًا): Glad tidings; here referring to winds that precede and announce the coming of rain.
  • Bayna yaday (بَيْنَ يَدَيْ): Literally "between His hands," meaning immediately before, as a herald.
  • Raḥmatihi (رَحْمَتِهِ): His mercy, specifically referring to rain that revives the dead earth.
  • Taʿālā Allāhu (تَعَالَى اللهُ): Exalted and far above is Allah — a declaration of His absolute transcendence.

Explanation of the Verse:

After presenting the blessings of hearing, sight, and the creation of the heavens and earth, Allah now poses another profound question to awaken the human conscience. He asks: "Is the one who guides you through the darkness of the land and the sea better, or the false gods you worship besides Him?"

Imagine yourself lost in the vast wilderness at night, with no roads, no landmarks, and darkness engulfing you from every side. Or imagine being on a ship in the middle of an ocean, with waves towering above you and no shore in sight. Who is it that guides you through such terrifying moments? It is Allah alone — through the stars He placed as celestial signposts, through the natural landmarks of the earth, and through the innate instinct and wisdom He granted you to navigate.

Then He reminds you of another mercy: He sends the winds as glad tidings before the rain. The winds gather the clouds, carry them across the skies, and then the rain falls, reviving barren lands and quenching the thirst of all living beings. This rain is described as His "mercy" because it brings life, sustenance, and hope.

After presenting these undeniable realities, Allah turns to the idolaters with a rhetorical question that leaves no room for argument: "Is there a god with Allah who does any of this?" The answer is self-evident — no one but Allah can do any of this. Yet they still associate partners with Him in worship.

The verse concludes with a declaration of Allah's absolute perfection: "Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him." He is far above, beyond, and completely free from the false partners they invent, for He alone is the Creator, the Guide, and the Merciful.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and reflect on these signs. Every time you travel and reach your destination safely, every time you see clouds gathering and rain falling, remember that it is Allah who guided you and showed you mercy. These are not random events — they are messages from your Lord, calling you to know Him, love Him, and worship Him alone.

The One who guides you through physical darkness is the same One who can guide you through the darkness of ignorance, confusion, and sin. Turn to Him in every moment of need, for He is always near, always listening, and always ready to respond. Let your heart find peace in His remembrance, and let your tongue be ever grateful for His countless blessings. Indeed, in every sign around you lies an invitation to draw closer to your Creator.

📜 Verse 61-65 — An-Naml

Is He [not best] who made the earth a stable ground and placed within it rivers and made for it firmly set mountains and placed between the two seas a barrier? Is there a deity with Allah? [No], but most of them do not know.
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember.
Is He [not best] who guides you through the darknesses of the land and sea and who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy? Is there a deity with Allah? High is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
Is He [not best] who begins creation and then repeats it and who provides for you from the heaven and earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected."
