Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Lawla: "Why not" or "If only" – expressing a demand or wish.
- Ūtiya: "He was given" – referring to being granted something.
- Sihrān: "Two magics" – referring to two things accused of being magic.
- Taẓāharā: "They supported each other" – meaning they mutually reinforced one another.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the truth came to the disbelievers of Quraysh from Allah — that truth being the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Qur'an — they did not receive it with humility or acceptance. Instead, they objected, saying: "Why was this man not given the like of what Moses was given?" They demanded miracles of the same kind that Moses received, such as the staff turning into a serpent or the shining hand, and a book revealed all at once. They thought that by making such demands, they could justify their rejection.
But Allah responds to their arrogance with a piercing question: "Did they not already disbelieve in what Moses was given before?" In other words, these very people — or their predecessors among the Jews and others — had already rejected the miracles of Moses when they were presented to them. They even went further, saying: "These are two magics that support one another" — meaning the Torah and the Qur'an, or Moses and Muhammad, were accused of being two acts of sorcery that reinforced each other. And they declared: "Indeed, we disbelieve in all of it."
So their objection was never about seeking truth; it was about stubbornness and pride. Had they truly sought guidance, they would have recognized the truth when it came, just as they should have recognized the miracles of Moses. But their hearts were sealed, and they used every excuse to turn away.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse reveals a profound truth about human nature: when people are determined to reject the truth, no miracle will ever satisfy them. The disbelievers of Makkah demanded signs, yet when signs came — the Qur'an itself being the greatest miracle — they still turned away. They even contradicted themselves, for they rejected Moses' miracles while demanding similar ones for Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Dear reader, let this be a lesson for us all. The Qur'an is the living miracle that remains with us today — a book of unmatched eloquence, profound wisdom, and eternal guidance. It challenges humanity to produce even a single chapter like it, and none have succeeded. So open your heart to its message, for it is the truth from your Lord, and the path to success in this life and the Hereafter. Do not be like those who made excuses and missed the greatest blessing. Embrace the truth, and let it transform your life.
