Key Words and Phrases:

  • Āyāt Allāh (آيَاتِ اللَّهِ): The signs, proofs, and evidences of Allah—both the revealed scriptures and the observable signs in the universe that point to His Oneness and Power.
  • Liqā’ihi (لِقَائِهِ): The meeting with Allah on the Day of Resurrection—the belief in being raised from the dead and standing before Him for judgment.
  • Ya’isū (يَئِسُوا): They have despaired, lost all hope, and given up entirely.
  • Rahmatī (رَحْمَتِي): My Mercy—the vast, encompassing mercy of Allah that is the gateway to Paradise and His forgiveness.
  • ʿAdhābun Alīm (عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ): A painful, agonizing punishment.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah describes the fate of those who deliberately and stubbornly reject His clear signs and deny the reality of meeting Him on the Day of Judgment. These are people who have seen the evidence of Allah’s existence, His power, and His wisdom—yet they turn away in arrogance and disbelief. They also deny the resurrection, refusing to believe that they will be brought back to life to account for their deeds.

For such people, Allah declares that they have despaired of His Mercy. This does not mean that Allah’s Mercy is limited or withheld arbitrarily—rather, it means that their own persistent disbelief and rejection have placed them beyond the reach of that Mercy. On the Day they witness the truth of what they denied, they will realize that no door of hope remains open for them. Their despair is certain, and their fate is sealed: a painful, agonizing punishment awaits them in the Hereafter.

The verse uses the past tense for "they have despaired" to emphasize the certainty of this outcome—it is so guaranteed that it is spoken of as an accomplished fact. This is a powerful warning that disbelief in Allah’s signs and denial of the meeting with Him lead to utter loss and ruin.

A Call to Reflection and Hope:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a warning—it is an invitation to open your heart to the truth before it is too late. Allah has placed countless signs around you: the sky above, the earth beneath, the miracle of your own existence, and the revealed guidance of the Qur’an. Each of these is a call from your Creator, inviting you to know Him, worship Him, and prepare for the meeting with Him.

Do not let arrogance or distraction keep you from this truth. The door of repentance is open right now—Allah’s Mercy is vast and encompasses everything. But that Mercy is for those who turn to Him, believe in His signs, and prepare for the Day of Meeting. Do not be among those who despair because they chose to reject. Be among those who respond to the call, who find hope in His Mercy, and who will be greeted with His eternal reward. The choice is yours, and the time is now.

📜 Verse 21-25 — Al-'Ankabut

He punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned.
And you will not cause failure [to Allah] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allah any protector or any helper.
And the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allah and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment.
And the answer of Abraham's people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allah saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
And [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allah, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers."
