Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Al-Mawt" (الموت): Here, it refers specifically to martyrdom (ash-shahādah) in the cause of Allah, not merely death in general.
  • "Tamannawna" (تمنون): You wished for, longed for, and eagerly desired.
  • "Talqawhu" (تلقوه): To meet it, encounter it, or face its reality and hardships.
  • "Ra'aytumuhu" (رأيتموه): You saw it with your own eyes, clearly and directly.
  • "Wa antum tanzurūn" (وأنتم تنظرون): While you were looking at it with full sight and awareness, not merely hearing about it.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers! Before the Battle of Uḥud, many of you sincerely wished to meet the enemy in battle, longing for the honor of martyrdom in Allah's path. You had seen your brothers in the Battle of Badr attain that noble rank, and your hearts burned with the desire to achieve the same glory. You said, "When will we have a day like the day of Badr, so we may fight and be martyred?"

So Allah, in His perfect wisdom, granted you exactly what you asked for — the opportunity to face the enemy at Uḥud. But when the moment came, and you saw the reality of battle — the swords, the spears, the arrows, the blood, and the severity of death — you witnessed it with your own eyes, and some of you wavered and fled.

This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder: You asked for this! You prayed for martyrdom and the chance to fight. Now that it has come to you, do not retreat. Stand firm, be patient, and prove the sincerity of your words with your actions. Allah tests the truthful by what they claim, so that their faith may be purified and their ranks elevated.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Be careful what you ask of Allah, because He may answer you. When you sincerely desire something good — like martyrdom, or any act of worship that requires sacrifice — know that Allah will bring you the means to achieve it, but He will also test your patience and steadfastness in that very moment.

Do not be like those who wish for honor but flee when its price is demanded. Be among those whose words match their deeds, whose hearts are firm when trials come, and who understand that the sweetness of victory and the reward of paradise are only reached through the bitterness of patience and sacrifice.

So, dear believer, when you ask Allah for the highest ranks, prepare yourself to pay the price with a steadfast heart and unwavering determination. For Allah loves those who say what they do, and do what they say.

📜 Verse 141-145 — Aal-Imran

And that Allah may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers.
Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?
And you had certainly wished for martyrdom before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on.
Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but Allah will reward the grateful.
And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful.
