Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- Tawallaw: Turned back, retreated, or fled from the battlefield.
- Istalallahum: Caused them to slip or stumble; the Shaytan sought to make them fall into error.
- Biba'di ma kasabu: Because of some of what they had earned — i.e., due to certain sins or shortcomings on their part.
Explanation of the Verse:
O companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), those among you who retreated on the day when the two armies met — the army of the believers and the army of the disbelievers at the Battle of Uhud — did not do so out of pure cowardice or betrayal. Rather, the Shaytan caused them to slip and stumble, exploiting their weaknesses and whispering to them until they disobeyed the Prophet's command to hold their positions. This happened because of some sins they had committed beforehand, which made them vulnerable to such whispers and opened a door for the enemy of mankind to influence them.
Yet, despite this grave mistake — which included abandoning their posts and fleeing from the battlefield — Allah, in His immense mercy and kindness, did not abandon them or punish them severely. He forgave them completely, wiping away their error and covering it with His pardon. He did not expose them or hold them accountable in a way that would destroy them.
Indeed, Allah is Ghafoor — the Oft-Forgiving — who pardons the sins of those who turn to Him in repentance, and He is Haleem — the Forbearing — who does not hasten to punish His servants when they err, giving them time to repent and return to Him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and beautiful message of hope for every believer who has ever stumbled or fallen into sin. It teaches us that Allah's mercy is vast beyond measure, and that even the most serious mistakes — like fleeing from battle, which is a major sin — can be forgiven through sincere repentance and Allah's grace.
Notice how Allah addressed these believers with gentleness after their error. He did not humiliate them or cast them out. Instead, He explained the cause of their slip, then immediately followed it with forgiveness and mercy. This is the nature of our Lord: He is quick to forgive and slow to punish.
So, dear reader, no matter what sin you have committed, no matter how great your failure, the door of repentance is always open. Do not let Shaytan, who caused these believers to slip, convince you that you are beyond redemption. Allah's forgiveness is greater than your sin, and His mercy encompasses everything. Turn back to Him sincerely, and you will find Him waiting with open arms, ready to forgive and to transform your weakness into strength.
