Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ضَرَبُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ: Traveled through the land seeking livelihood, trade, or other pursuits.
- غُزًّى: Warriors engaged in battle (plural of *ghāzin*).
- حَسْرَةً: Deep regret, grief, and anguish that settles in the heart.
Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger, do not imitate the disbelievers—those who deny their Lord and harbor hypocrisy in their hearts. When their brothers—in disbelief or kinship—traveled through the land seeking provision or went out to fight in Allah’s cause, and then died or were killed, they said: "If only they had stayed with us, they would not have died and would not have been killed." They uttered this out of weak faith and ignorance of Allah’s decree, not realizing that life and death are entirely in Allah’s hands.
Allah made this very statement a source of intense grief and regret lodged firmly in their hearts, increasing their sorrow in this world. As for the believers, they know with certainty that whatever befalls a person—whether in travel, at home, in battle, or in peace—occurs by Allah’s will and decree. Therefore, their hearts find tranquility, and their afflictions are eased, for they submit to the wisdom of their Lord.
Indeed, Allah alone gives life and causes death. Whoever is destined to live will live, even if he is in the midst of battle; and whoever’s appointed time has come will die, even if he remains at home surrounded by safety. No place, no action, and no precaution can change what Allah has decreed. And Allah is All-Seeing of everything you do—nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward or punish you accordingly.
A Call to Faith and Reflection:
Dear believer, let this verse be a profound lesson for your heart. Do not let the whispers of doubt and despair creep into your soul when faced with trials, loss, or the death of loved ones. The disbelievers’ words stem from a heart that does not truly know Allah—a heart that believes safety lies in staying put and death comes only from travel or battle. But you, O believer, know better! Your Lord is the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is. He has written every soul’s provision, lifespan, and destiny before the heavens and the earth were created.
So, when calamity strikes, do not say, "If only we had done this, that would not have happened." Instead, say, "This is the decree of Allah, and what He wills, He does." This is the path of the righteous—the path that turns grief into patience, and patience into reward. Allah sees your deeds, your struggles, and your sincerity. He is the Most Merciful, and He will never let the efforts of the believers go to waste.
Let this verse draw you closer to your Lord, strengthen your trust in His wisdom, and fill your heart with contentment in His decree. For truly, the believer who submits to Allah finds peace even in the midst of storms, knowing that his Lord is the Best of Planners, and that every trial is but a step toward an eternal reward that never fades.
