Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Manna (granted a great favor): The act of bestowing an immense, undeserved blessing out of pure grace and kindness.
- Yuzakkihim (purifies them): Cleansing them from the filth of polytheism, bad morals, and spiritual corruption.
- Al-Hikmah (the wisdom): The prophetic Sunnah (the teachings, practices, and guidance of the Prophet ﷺ), which explains and complements the Book of Allah.
- Dalal Mubin (clear misguidance): A manifest and obvious error, far removed from the path of truth and righteousness.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
Indeed, Allah has bestowed a magnificent and unparalleled favor upon the believers when He raised from among themselves a Messenger—a man from their own lineage, their own language, and their own society. This was no distant, alien figure; rather, it was Muhammad ﷺ, a man whose honesty, trustworthiness, and noble character were well known to them. This closeness was itself a mercy, for they could understand him perfectly, witness his truthfulness firsthand, and learn from his living example.
This Messenger was sent with four sublime missions, each one a pillar of human salvation:
First, he recites to them the verses of Allah—the Qur'an—which illuminates their minds and guides their hearts to the knowledge of their Creator and His divine will.
Second, he purifies them, cleansing their souls from the darkness of shirk (associating partners with Allah), from the rust of sin, and from the corruption of vile morals. He elevates them from the worship of stones and idols to the worship of the Lord of the worlds, and from the savagery of ignorance to the refinement of prophetic character.
Third, he teaches them the Book, the Qur'an, with its laws, its stories, and its profound wisdom, so that they may live by its guidance.
And fourth, he teaches them the Wisdom—the Sunnah—which details and explains the Book, showing them how to implement Allah's commands in every aspect of their daily lives.
And what was their state before this blessing? The verse reminds us: "Although they were before in clear misguidance." They were lost in the darkness of idolatry, burying their daughters alive, engaging in tribal bloodshed, and knowing nothing of their Lord or His messengers. They were on the brink of the fire of Hell, yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, pulled them out of that abyss and placed them upon the straight path.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
O beloved reader, pause and reflect on this verse. If Allah granted this favor to the believers of that time, then know that the same Qur'an is still being recited, the same purification is still available, and the same wisdom is still taught to every generation that turns to it. This is not merely a historical event—it is an ongoing mercy. The Prophet ﷺ is gone, but his message remains, alive and radiant, calling you to the same honor and the same salvation.
So, let this verse awaken in your heart a profound gratitude to Allah for the greatest blessing ever given to humanity: the sending of His final Messenger. And let that gratitude translate into action—by following his path, clinging to his Sunnah, and striving to embody the purity and wisdom he brought. For whoever holds firmly to this message has indeed grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks, and has been saved from the clear misguidance that surrounds us on every side. Rejoice, then, in the mercy of Allah and His favor, for it is better than all that the world can offer.
