Word Meanings:

(Durr): Hardship, affliction, distress — such as illness, poverty, or drought.
(Munībīn): Turning back to Allah sincerely, with humility and repentance, returning to Him alone.
(Adhāqahum minhu raḥmah): Made them taste His mercy — meaning He relieved their distress and granted them ease, provision, and well-being.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse highlights a profound truth about human nature — a truth that serves as a mirror for every soul. When hardship strikes people — whether it be sickness, poverty, or calamity — they instinctively turn to their Lord alone, calling upon Him with sincere hearts, humbling themselves before Him, and abandoning all false objects of worship. In that moment of crisis, their fitrah (natural disposition) awakens, and they recognize that no one can remove harm except Allah.

But then comes the critical test: when Allah, in His infinite mercy, lifts the affliction and grants them relief, provision, and well-being — behold, a group of them reverts to shirk (associating partners with Allah). They forget the One who saved them and return to their previous ways of invoking others alongside Him.

This verse exposes the inconsistency of the human heart when it is not grounded in true faith. It teaches us that trials and blessings are both tests from Allah. In times of hardship, people remember Allah out of desperation; but in times of ease, many forget Him out of heedlessness. The believer, however, is one whose devotion remains constant — whether in times of difficulty or comfort. They call upon Allah in times of need and continue to thank and worship Him in times of plenty.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse be a gentle reminder for you and me. How often do we find ourselves turning to Allah only when we are in trouble, and then drifting away when life becomes comfortable? True faith is not a fair-weather companion — it is a constant, living relationship with our Creator. Allah does not need our worship; rather, we need His guidance and mercy at every moment of our existence.

Let us strive to be among those who remember Allah in both hardship and ease, who thank Him in prosperity as sincerely as they call upon Him in adversity. This is the path of the righteous — a path that leads to peace in this life and eternal success in the Hereafter. May Allah make us among His grateful, steadfast servants.

📜 Verse 31-35 — Ar-Rum

[Adhere to it], turning in repentance to Him, and fear Him and establish prayer and do not be of those who associate others with Allah
[Or] of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has.
And when adversity touches the people, they call upon their Lord, turning in repentance to Him. Then when He lets them taste mercy from Him, at once a party of them associate others with their Lord,
So that they will deny what We have granted them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.
Or have We sent down to them an authority, and it speaks of what they were associating with Him?
