Surah Ar-Rum — Verse 32

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues the divine command to the believers to remain steadfast upon pure monotheism and the straight path, and it warns them against falling into the same error as those who came before — namely, the people of division and innovation. Allah describes those who "split their religion" — meaning they took parts of the revelation and abandoned other parts, following their own desires and inclinations rather than submitting wholly to Allah's command. They did not accept the religion as a complete, unified way of life; instead, they cherry-picked what suited them and discarded what did not.

These people became Shiya'an — sects and factions, each group rallying around its own leaders, opinions, and innovations. They turned the religion of unity into a religion of division, each faction claiming to possess the truth while condemning the others. This is a hallmark of those who follow their whims: they fragment the divine message to fit their own agendas.

Then Allah describes their psychological state: "Each faction rejoicing in what it has." They are not merely divided — they are *delighted* in their division. Every group is fully convinced that it alone is upon the truth, and everyone else is upon falsehood. They take pride in their own doctrines, celebrate their own innovations, and feel a false sense of security and contentment in their deviation. This self-satisfaction is a dangerous disease, for it blinds them to the reality of their error and prevents them from seeking the true path.

This verse serves as a profound warning to the Muslim community across all ages. The religion of Islam is one — a complete, harmonious system revealed by the One God. To divide it, to take some parts and leave others, to form partisan groups that celebrate their own opinions over the divine text, is to repeat the very mistake that Allah condemns here. The believers are called to unity upon the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, to accept the religion in its entirety, and to beware of the arrogance of thinking that one's own group — and only one's own group — holds the truth.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect deeply upon this verse. How easy it is for human beings to fall into this trap! We see it throughout history — and even today — when people become so attached to their own scholars, their own groups, their own interpretations, that they rejoice in division rather than seeking unity upon the clear truth. But Allah calls us to something far greater: to submit wholly to Him, to hold fast to His rope all together, and to be one community upon the pure message of Islam. The Qur'an is not a buffet where we pick and choose; it is a complete guidance for every aspect of life. When we accept it fully, with sincerity and humility, we find the peace and unity that no faction can ever provide. And when we see others rejoicing in their own ways, let us not be deceived — let us hold firmly to the truth, and pray that Allah keeps our hearts united upon it, for He is the Guide to the straight path.
