Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Bima ataynahum" — with what We have given them (of blessings, mercy, and relief from hardship).
  • "Fatamatta'u" — so enjoy yourselves (in this worldly life).
  • "Fasawfa ta'lamun" — then you will come to know (the consequences of your ingratitude).

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues the narrative about those who, when afflicted with hardship and adversity, turn to their Lord in sincere supplication. But when He removes the hardship and grants them relief and abundance, they ungratefully associate partners with Him and deny the very blessings He bestowed upon them. The phrase *"liyakfuru bima ataynahum"* indicates that their ingratitude is a direct response to the favors We granted them — instead of thanking Allah for easing their distress and restoring their well-being, they repay His kindness with disbelief and polytheism.

Then comes the divine address, filled with both warning and stern rebuke: *"Fatamatta'u"* — "So enjoy yourselves!" This is not a genuine invitation to pleasure, but rather a threatening command, like saying: "Go ahead, take your fill of worldly delights for a fleeting moment — but know that this enjoyment is temporary and will soon come to an end." The phrase *"fasawfa ta'lamun"* — "then you will come to know" — is a powerful promise of accountability. It means: You will certainly know, on the Day of Resurrection, the bitter outcome of your ingratitude. You will see with your own eyes that your path was one of clear misguidance, and you will taste the punishment for every blessing you denied and every favor you rejected.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: gratitude (*shukr*) is the key to the preservation and increase of blessings, while ingratitude (*kufr*) invites the removal of blessings and the descent of punishment. The Qur'an repeatedly reminds us that Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. So let this be a moment of reflection — how often do we forget Allah in times of ease, though we remember Him in times of distress? How often do we attribute our successes to our own efforts, forgetting the One who granted them?

Dear reader, this is an invitation to make gratitude a permanent state of your heart. When you wake up healthy, when you eat your daily bread, when you find safety and peace — remember that these are not mere coincidences. They are gifts from the Most Merciful, who asks only for your thanks. And know with certainty that the One who tests you with hardship is the same One who rewards you for patience and gratitude. So be among those who say, *"Alhamdulillah 'ala kulli hal"* — praise be to Allah in every situation — and you will find that your blessings multiply, your heart becomes content, and your Lord becomes pleased with you. The temporary pleasures of this world are nothing compared to the eternal bliss that awaits the grateful. So choose wisely, for the Day will surely come when every soul will know the true consequence of its deeds.

📜 Verse 32-36 — Ar-Rum

[Or] of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has.
And when adversity touches the people, they call upon their Lord, turning in repentance to Him. Then when He lets them taste mercy from Him, at once a party of them associate others with their Lord,
So that they will deny what We have granted them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.
Or have We sent down to them an authority, and it speaks of what they were associating with Him?
And when We let the people taste mercy, they rejoice therein, but if evil afflicts them for what their hands have put forth, immediately they despair.
