Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse unveils the true nature of the hypocrites among the believers during times of hardship and fear. Allah describes them as miserly toward you — O believers — in every sense: they withhold their wealth from spending in the cause of Allah, they withhold their lives from fighting alongside you, and they withhold their hearts from genuine love and loyalty toward you. Their stinginess stems from the deep-seated hatred and envy buried within their chests, and their excessive love for this worldly life coupled with their dread of death.
Then Allah paints a vivid scene: when fear comes — when the enemy draws near, when swords are unsheathed, and the battle becomes fierce — you see them staring at you with their eyes rolling in their sockets, like the gaze of a person overwhelmed by the throes of death. Their minds go blank, their vision becomes fixed and dazed, and terror paralyzes them completely. This is the stark image of cowardice and the absence of faith.
But the moment the fear subsides and safety returns, they assail you with sharp tongues — they become bold, loud, and hurtful, speaking harsh words that cut like blades. They claim their share of the spoils, saying, "We were with you in the battle! Give us our due!" Yet when it comes to the good of war booty, they are miserly and envious, grudging the believers their rightful gains. Their courage appears only after the danger has passed, and their generosity appears only when there is something to grab.
Allah then delivers the decisive verdict: These people have never truly believed. Their faith was only on their tongues, not in their hearts. Therefore, Allah rendered their deeds void — their prayers, their apparent sacrifices, and their claims of participation count for nothing in His sight. And this nullification was easy for Allah, for He is the All-Powerful, and no deed of a hypocrite can ever weigh heavy in His balance.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
Dear believer, this verse is a mirror for the soul. It teaches us that faith is not a claim to be uttered but a reality to be lived. True faith transforms a person: it makes them generous with their wealth, brave in the face of danger, and gentle in their speech. It roots out miserliness, cowardice, and hypocrisy from the heart.
Let this be a reminder to examine ourselves: Are we among those who stand firm when trials come, or do we retreat when the winds blow hard? Do we spend for the sake of Allah with open hearts, or do we cling to our wealth? Do our tongues bring comfort to others, or do they wound and cut?
The hypocrites lost everything because their deeds were built on sand — no sincerity, no truth. But you, O believer, have the opportunity to build your deeds on the solid rock of faith and sincerity. Allah sees your efforts, and He never lets the reward of the righteous be lost. So be among those whose hearts are firm, whose hands are open, and whose tongues are kind — for Allah loves the doers of good, and His reward for them is great indeed.
