Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- المُعَوِّقِينَ (al-muʿawwiqīn): Those who hinder, discourage, or hold others back—specifically from fighting in the cause of Allah.
- هَلُمَّ إِلَيْنَا (halumma ilaynā): "Come to us" or "Come over to our side"—an invitation to abandon the Prophet and his companions.
- الْبَأْسَ (al-baʾs): The battle, warfare, or armed conflict—referring here to fighting in the way of Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the All-Knowing, whose knowledge encompasses every hidden thought and secret intention, declares that He is fully aware of those among the believers who actively discourage others from joining the struggle in His cause. These are the people who, with their words and actions, try to weaken the resolve of the faithful and turn them away from supporting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his mission.
They go even further, addressing their brothers in faith and saying: "Come to us! Leave Muhammad and his companions to themselves—do not go out to fight with him, for we fear that you will be killed or destroyed alongside him." They present their discouragement as concern and care, but in reality, it is pure hypocrisy and a desire to see the ranks of the believers weakened.
Yet, despite all their talk and their attempts to pull others away from the battlefield, these very same people do not themselves come to fight—except rarely and reluctantly. When they do appear, it is not out of sincere faith or a desire to support the truth; rather, it is for show, to avoid the shame and disgrace of being labeled cowards, or out of fear of what others might say about them. Their participation is hollow, devoid of any genuine intention to please Allah or to defend His religion.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. Allah knows what is in your breast—He sees whether your actions are driven by sincere faith or by the desire to be seen and praised by people. The hypocrites of old tried to weaken the Ummah by pulling others away from the path of Allah, yet they themselves were the first to flee from hardship. How beautiful is the opposite path—the path of those who rush to support the truth, who encourage others to goodness, and who stand firm in the face of adversity, seeking only the pleasure of their Lord!
Do not be among those who hinder others from good while excusing themselves from it. Rather, be a source of strength for your brothers and sisters, urging them toward righteousness and standing shoulder to shoulder with them in every noble cause. Remember that Allah's knowledge is perfect and His watch is ever-present—so let your deeds be pure, your intentions sincere, and your heart attached to what pleases Him alone. For the one who fights for Allah's cause, even for a moment, has earned a station far greater than the one who spends a lifetime discouraging others from it.
