Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Junood (جُنُودٌ): Armies or troops; here referring to the confederate forces that gathered against the Muslims.
- Reehan (رِيحًا): A wind; specifically the fierce, icy wind sent by Allah to dismantle the enemy's camp.
- Junoodan lam tarawha (جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا): Invisible troops — angels sent by Allah to support the believers, unseen by human eyes.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have believed in Allah and committed yourselves to His guidance! Call to mind, with deep gratitude and reflection, the immense favor of Allah upon you during the critical days of the Battle of the Trench (Al-Ahzab) in Madinah. When the confederate armies — the Quraysh and their allies from outside, along with the hypocrites and the Jewish tribes from within — united against you, encircling the city with overwhelming numbers and intent on your destruction, your situation seemed dire. Your lives, your families, and your faith itself were under grave threat.
But then, Allah’s mercy descended. He sent upon those besieging armies a violent, freezing wind — the wind of As-Saba — that tore through their camp, extinguished their fires, overturned their cooking pots, and filled their hearts with terror. And alongside that wind, He dispatched legions of angels that you could not see, striking fear into the hearts of your enemies and causing their plans to unravel completely. The mighty coalition that had gathered with such arrogance was scattered and defeated without a single sword being raised by you in that final hour. It was purely Allah’s power and protection that saved you.
And Allah is ever All-Seeing of what you do — whether it was your tireless digging of the trench, your steadfastness in faith, your patience under siege, or your sincerity in supplication. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He rewards every deed with perfect justice and boundless mercy.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is not merely a historical account — it is a living lesson for every generation. When the forces of falsehood gather against you, whether they come in the form of armies, ideologies, trials, or temptations, remember that Allah’s power is far greater than any human might. He can send His help from directions you never imagined, through means you cannot perceive. Just as He saved the early Muslims from certain destruction, He can save you from every hardship — if you place your trust in Him, remain patient, and stay firm upon His path.
So let this verse awaken in your heart a profound sense of gratitude. Count the blessings of Allah in your life — the breath in your lungs, the faith in your heart, the protection you often take for granted — and let that gratitude translate into obedience and love for Him. And know, with certainty, that Allah sees your efforts, your struggles, and your sacrifices. Nothing is wasted with Him. He is the Best of Protectors, and His help is always near for those who call upon Him with sincerity.
