Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Sādiqīn (الصَّادِقِينَ): The truthful ones — here referring to the Prophets and Messengers who were utterly truthful in conveying Allah’s message.
- Ṣidqihim (صِدْقِهِمْ): Their truthfulness — meaning their complete and faithful delivery of the divine message to their nations.
- Aʿadda (أَعَدَّ): Prepared or made ready — indicating that the punishment is already decreed and waiting.
- ʿAdhāban Alīman (عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا): A painful torment — referring to the severe punishment of Hellfire.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His perfect wisdom, took a solemn and binding covenant from all the Prophets and Messengers — from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — that they would convey His message with absolute truthfulness and patience. This verse explains the divine purpose behind that covenant: so that He may ask the truthful ones about their truthfulness on the Day of Judgment.
Now, one might wonder: why would Allah ask the Prophets about their truthfulness when He already knows everything, including their perfect sincerity? The wisdom here is profound. This questioning is not for Allah’s own knowledge — He is All-Knowing and nothing is hidden from Him. Rather, it serves as a decisive testimony against the nations who rejected them. When the Prophets stand before Allah and testify that they indeed delivered the message clearly and truthfully, and that their people denied them out of arrogance and stubbornness, the evidence against those disbelieving nations becomes complete and undeniable. There will be no excuse left for them on that Day.
The verse then concludes with a stern warning: “And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful torment.” This means that for those who rejected the Messengers, denied their truthfulness, and persisted in disbelief, Allah has already prepared a severe and agonizing punishment — the fire of Hell. It is not merely threatened; it is fully prepared and awaiting them.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for us today. It reminds us that Allah’s messengers were the epitome of truthfulness — they endured hardship, mockery, and persecution, yet they never wavered in conveying the truth. Their example calls us to be truthful in our own lives, to stand firm upon the message of Islam, and to never fear the rejection of people when we are upon the truth.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on the greatness of this divine plan. Allah took a covenant from every Prophet — from Noah to Abraham, from Moses to Jesus, and finally to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — that they would deliver the same core message: worship Allah alone and follow His guidance. And now, that same message has reached you through the final Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophets fulfilled their trust with perfect truthfulness. The question is: how will you respond to their call?
Will you be among those who accept the truth, believe in the Messengers, and earn the pleasure of Allah? Or will you be among those who turn away, only to face the painful torment that has already been prepared?
The choice is yours, and the time is now. Embrace the truth of Islam, follow the example of the truthful Prophets, and let your life be a testimony of sincerity and devotion to your Creator. For indeed, the reward of the truthful is Paradise, and the punishment of the disbelievers is a painful torment — and Allah’s promise is true and certain.
