Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sābighāt (سَابِغَاتٍ): Complete, wide, and full-length coats of mail (armor) that cover the entire body of the warrior.
- Qaddir (قَدِّرْ): Make precise and proportionate; measure accurately.
- Al-Sard (السَّرْد): The interlocking of rings in chainmail armor; the weaving and joining of the armor's links.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Exalted, commanded His Prophet Dawud (David, peace be upon him) to manufacture coats of armor that were complete, spacious, and fully protective—covering the body entirely so that no vulnerable spot remained exposed. This was a divine gift and a unique skill bestowed upon him, as iron was made soft and pliable in his hands, a miracle from Allah.
Allah further instructed him to perfect the craft by precisely adjusting the rings and the pins (rivets) that held them together. He was told not to make the rings too small, lest they become weak and unable to withstand blows, nor too large, lest they become heavy and burdensome for the wearer. The balance had to be exact—neither too fine nor too coarse—so that the armor would serve its purpose effectively in battle.
Then, Allah expanded the command beyond Dawud alone, saying: "And work righteousness, O family of Dawud." This included acts of obedience, gratitude, and sincere devotion to Allah. The command was not limited to physical craftsmanship but extended to spiritual excellence—worship, justice, and good deeds.
The verse concludes with a profound reassurance: "Indeed, I am All-Seeing of what you do." This is a reminder that Allah observes every action, whether great or small, hidden or apparent. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward each person according to their deeds with perfect justice and wisdom.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse teaches us that excellence in any craft or profession can be an act of worship when combined with sincerity and good intention. Prophet Dawud did not merely produce armor for worldly gain; he did so with precision, skill, and obedience to Allah, turning his trade into a means of drawing closer to his Lord.
Dear reader, reflect on this: Allah sees your work, your efforts, and your intentions. When you perfect your craft—whether you are a builder, a teacher, a doctor, or a student—and you combine it with righteousness and sincerity, your daily labor becomes an act of devotion. The same hands that earn a living can also earn the pleasure of Allah.
Moreover, this verse invites us to strive for balance and precision in all our affairs—neither excessive nor negligent—just as Dawud was commanded to perfect the rings of his armor. And above all, let us remember that Allah's watchful eye over us is not a source of fear alone, but a source of hope and comfort: He sees our struggles, our efforts, and our sincere attempts to do good, and He will never let them go to waste. So work with excellence, act with righteousness, and place your trust in the All-Seeing, All-Knowing Lord.
