Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fadlan (فَضْلًا): A great favor, bounty, or distinction — here referring to prophethood, kingship, and knowledge.
  • Awwibī (أَوِّبِي): Return repeatedly, or echo — meaning to join in the glorification of Allah, repeating the praise of Him.
  • Alannā (أَلَنَّا): We made soft, pliable, or malleable.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah reminds us of His immense favor upon His prophet and servant, Dawud (David), peace be upon him. Allah granted him a unique combination of blessings: prophethood, a divine scripture (the Zabur), and a powerful kingdom. This was not merely worldly success — it was a spiritual and material honor that elevated him among mankind.

Then comes a breathtaking scene: Allah addressed the mountains and the birds, commanding them to join Dawud in glorifying Allah. When Dawud would recite the praises of his Lord, the mighty mountains would echo his words, and the birds would gather and chant with him in perfect harmony. This was a visible miracle — creation itself submitting to the truth and praising its Creator alongside His chosen prophet.

And as if that were not enough, Allah softened iron for Dawud. The hard, unyielding metal became like dough in his hands — he could shape it without fire or hammer, crafting armor and tools with ease. This was both a miracle and a practical skill, teaching us that when Allah grants a person ability, He also provides the means to benefit humanity.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries profound lessons for every believer:

  1. True honor comes from Allah: Dawud was not great because of his own effort alone — Allah chose him, blessed him, and granted him excellence. When we seek success, we should turn to the One who holds all blessings in His hands.
  2. Harmony with creation: The mountains and birds glorified Allah with Dawud. Today, when you hear the wind, the rain, or the songs of birds, remember that all of creation is in a state of remembrance of its Lord. Join them — through your own prayer, dhikr, and gratitude.
  3. Skill and craftsmanship are divine gifts: Allah taught Dawud to work with iron, and this became a means of protection and provision for his people. Islam does not separate spirituality from work — rather, it elevates honest labor into an act of worship when done with sincerity and intention to benefit others.
  4. The power of submission: When iron — the hardest of materials — submitted to the will of Allah, it became soft. Likewise, when a heart submits to its Creator, what seemed impossible becomes possible. Difficulties soften, trials become lessons, and burdens become blessings.

So, dear believer, look at your own life: what "iron" seems too hard to shape? What challenges feel immovable? Remember that the same Allah who softened iron for Dawud can ease your path, open your doors, and turn your hardships into opportunities — if you turn to Him with a sincere heart and trust in His power.

And let the example of Dawud inspire you to combine worship with excellence, prayer with productivity, and faith with service to others. That is the balanced, beautiful way of the prophets — and it is open to you, too, in every age.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Saba

Has he invented about Allah a lie or is there in him madness?" Rather, they who do not believe in the Hereafter will be in the punishment and [are in] extreme error.
Then, do they not look at what is before them and what is behind them of the heaven and earth? If We should will, We could cause the earth to swallow them or [could] let fall upon them fragments from the sky. Indeed in that is a sign for every servant turning back [to Allah].
And We certainly gave David from Us bounty. [We said], "O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well]." And We made pliable for him iron,
[Commanding him], "Make full coats of mail and calculate [precisely] the links, and work [all of you] righteousness. Indeed I, of what you do, am Seeing."
And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind - its morning [journey was that of] a month - and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month, and We made flow for him a spring of [liquid] copper. And among the jinn were those who worked for him by the permission of his Lord. And whoever deviated among them from Our command - We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze.
