Word Meanings:

  • Al-Kafoor (الْكَفُور): The one who is extreme in ingratitude and disbelief, who persistently denies Allah's blessings and refuses to acknowledge His favors, despite clear evidence.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse concludes the story of the people of Sheba, who were blessed with two magnificent gardens—one on the right and one on the left—flowing with abundant provisions from their Lord. Yet, instead of showing gratitude, they turned away from Allah's command, rejected His messengers, and became arrogant. As a result, Allah sent upon them the devastating flood of the dam (Sayl al-'Arim), which destroyed their gardens and replaced their fruitful orchards with bitter, thorny trees and shrubs bearing no benefit.

The verse states: "That is how We repaid them for their ingratitude." This means the transformation of their blessings into punishment was a direct consequence of their disbelief and refusal to thank Allah for His countless favors. The second part of the verse poses a rhetorical question: "And do We punish except the ungrateful?" This emphasizes that Allah's severe punishment is reserved for those who are deeply entrenched in ingratitude and disbelief—those who reject His signs, deny His blessings, and persist in their transgression despite every warning.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. It reminds us that blessings are a trust from Allah, and gratitude is the key that preserves them. When we acknowledge Allah's favors—through our hearts, our tongues, and our actions—He increases us in goodness. But when we become heedless, arrogant, or deny His mercy, we risk losing what we hold dear. The story of Sheba is not merely history; it is a mirror reflecting the universal law of cause and effect in the spiritual realm. Allah does not wrong anyone; rather, it is we who wrong ourselves through our choices.

Let this verse inspire you to look around and count the blessings you often take for granted—health, family, sustenance, faith. Each one is a gift from the Most Merciful, deserving of gratitude. And know that Allah's mercy is vast; even after punishment, He accepts repentance and restores what was lost. So turn to Him with a grateful heart, and He will open for you doors of provision and peace beyond your imagination. Indeed, gratitude is not just a word—it is a way of life that draws you closer to your Creator and shields you from the consequences of ingratitude.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Saba

There was for [the tribe of] Saba' in their dwelling place a sign: two [fields of] gardens on the right and on the left. [They were told], "Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land [have you], and a forgiving Lord."
But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.
[By] that We repaid them because they disbelieved. And do We [thus] repay except the ungrateful?
And We placed between them and the cities which We had blessed [many] visible cities. And We determined between them the [distances of] journey, [saying], "Travel between them by night or day in safety."
But [insolently] they said, "Our Lord, lengthen the distance between our journeys," and wronged themselves, so We made them narrations and dispersed them in total dispersion. Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
