Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Surur (سُرُرٍ): Plural of *sareer*, meaning thrones or couches adorned for reclining, signifying honor and comfort.
  • Mutagabilin (مُتَقَابِلِينَ): Facing one another, looking at each other directly without any obstruction or turning of backs.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah describes the blissful state of the righteous believers in Paradise, saying that they will be upon luxurious couches, facing one another. This is a scene of perfect intimacy, mutual respect, and heartfelt connection. They recline in comfort and dignity, yet their faces are turned toward each other—not out of necessity, but out of love and honor. No one sees the back of another; rather, their seating is arranged so that they can gaze upon one another with affection and joy, sharing in the delight of their eternal reward.

This facing of one another reflects the purity of their hearts and the harmony of their company. In Paradise, there is no envy, no malice, no turning away in anger or indifference. Instead, every glance exchanged is one of warmth and brotherhood. The couches themselves are described as turning with them, so that wherever they sit, they are naturally positioned to see each other—a sign of Allah’s perfect design in granting them complete happiness in both comfort and companionship.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Imagine a gathering where every face you see brings you peace, every word spoken is kind, and every heart is free from grudges. That is the reality of Paradise for those who strive in this life to purify their souls and treat others with love and respect. This verse invites us to reflect: if we desire such blessed company in the Hereafter, let us begin today by mending broken ties, forgiving those who wronged us, and looking at our fellow Muslims with the same warmth we hope to share in Jannah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that believers are like one body—when we face each other with sincerity, we already taste a glimpse of that eternal joy. So let this image inspire you: to be among those who will recline on couches, facing one another in love, is a promise worth every effort we make in this world. May Allah make us among them.
