Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Munthir (مُنذِر): A warner who cautions people against the consequences of their actions.
  • Sāhir (سَاحِر): A sorcerer or magician — one who practices deceptive arts.
  • Kadhdhāb (كَذَّاب): An inveterate liar, one who habitually tells falsehoods.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The verse reveals a profound truth about human nature when confronted with divine guidance. The disbelievers of Makkah were astonished — genuinely amazed — that Allah sent them a warner from among themselves, a human being like them, to call them to the path of truth. This astonishment was not born of sincere curiosity but of arrogant rejection. They found it inconceivable that a mortal man, one of their own, could be chosen by Allah to deliver His message. Their hearts, hardened by pride and attachment to their ancestral ways, could not accept that a fellow human being — someone they knew, walked among them, and shared their daily life — could be the recipient of divine revelation.

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) proclaimed the Oneness of Allah, declaring that their many idols were false and that there is only One God worthy of worship, their astonishment turned into outright hostility. They said: "This man is a sorcerer, a liar." They accused him of magic to explain away the profound truth he brought, and they called him a liar to dismiss his message without engaging with it. This was their defense mechanism — rather than reflect on the truth, they attacked the messenger.

Yet, what was truly astonishing was their rejection itself. Here was a man of impeccable character, known among them as "Al-Amin" (the trustworthy) and "Al-Sadiq" (the truthful) for forty years before his prophethood. They trusted him with their wealth, their secrets, and their lives — yet when he brought them the greatest treasure of all, the message of monotheism, they suddenly branded him a sorcerer and a liar. This contradiction exposes the real nature of their disbelief: it was not based on evidence or reason, but on stubbornness and fear of change.

The deeper lesson for us is profound: the messengers of Allah have always been human beings, not angels, precisely so that we can follow their example. If a prophet were an angel, we could excuse ourselves by saying, "We cannot be like angels." But because they were humans who struggled, faced trials, and overcame them through faith, we have no excuse. Every human being can strive to emulate their character, their patience, and their devotion.

This verse also teaches us that the path of truth will always face opposition. The disbelievers of every era have their own ways of dismissing the message — sometimes by accusing the caller of sorcery, sometimes of madness, sometimes of mere storytelling. But the believer's duty remains clear: to deliver the message with sincerity, patience, and wisdom, trusting that Allah is the One who guides hearts.

Reflect, dear reader: What astonishes you about this message? The fact that a human being was chosen as a prophet? Or the fact that people could reject such clear truth? Let this verse be a reminder that the greatest miracle is not in the supernatural, but in the transformation of hearts — from disbelief to faith, from arrogance to humility, from polytheism to the pure worship of the One True God. And that transformation is available to you, right now, if you open your heart to the truth that the Prophet (peace be upon him) brought.
