- Lāta (ولات): A word meaning "not" — used to negate, specifically indicating that the time has passed.

Explanation of the Verse:
How many nations before these disbelievers did We destroy! They were communities that rejected their messengers and persisted in disbelief and arrogance. When the punishment of Allah descended upon them, they suddenly cried out in desperation, calling for help and pleading for deliverance. But their cries were utterly futile — it was not a time for repentance to be accepted, nor was there any chance of escape or rescue. The moment of punishment had arrived, and no amount of screaming or seeking refuge could change their fate. The door of mercy had closed, and the time for action had long passed.
This verse serves as a profound warning to those who witness the fate of past nations yet remain heedless. It reminds us that Allah's punishment is certain for those who persist in transgression, and that the opportunity for repentance has a deadline — one that arrives when the angel of death appears or when the signs of destruction manifest. The disbelievers of Makkah, like those before them, were given ample time and countless warnings, yet they continued in their arrogance. When the punishment comes, regret and desperate calls will be of no avail.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect deeply on this verse. The nations before us were stronger, wealthier, and more advanced in many ways, yet when their time came, their power and resources could not save them. Their cries for help echoed into the void, unanswered. This is a lesson for us all: the door of repentance is open *now*, in this very moment, before the signs of death or destruction overtake us. Do not wait until it is too late. Turn to your Lord today, seek His forgiveness sincerely, and live a life of obedience — for tomorrow may never come, and the time of escape will have passed. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us this warning so that we may be among those who heed it and succeed in this life and the Hereafter.
